We were lucky to catch up with Erick Mertz recently and have shared our conversation below.
Erick, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you share a customer success story with us?
Most of my clients have a common dream. Publishing a story.
More specifically, their story.
When I met my client — lets call her Amadnda, I knew she had a unique quality that let me know she was looking at success. That was guile.
Her story was a thriller. When I started editorial work on the book, it was rough. The voice was uneven. Characters were hit and miss. The plot was strong through. She really knew what the story was about, which is important in the editorial process.
Amanda and I worked through multiple rewrites of the book together. That process is hard, often characterized by recognizing what needed work. But Amanda never shied away. Our conversations were constructive, positive, and in the end, resulted in a great novel.
How great? She sold it to a mid-sized publisher within a year.
That’s not all though. Amanda reached out to me about a month ago to tell me she needed help on her next project. A two book deal she signed with a major fiction publishing house.
Her success is one I couldn’t wait to share. It is proof that if you have the guile to work hard and stick to your vision, you can achieve anything.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’ve been a ghostwriter and developmental editor for the last twenty years. I work with clients from around the world to create unique stories they can be proud of.
I am most proud when clients come back to me. I have seen it happen many times before, and it never gets old. Working with people is my passion and when those clients recognize the results, and come back for more, I am the happiest.
Because they are.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Word of mouth. I really think that when a client has a positive experience, they want to talk about it. That bit of social proof, the testimonials from successful clients, is the best way to build your new client base.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I have worked with numerous agencies, whether that be as an editor or ghostwriter, over the years. So often I find that those companies strive for one thing: money. They will tell clients what they want to hear about the commercial viability of their projects, their careers and aspirations, anything to land the deal.
My mission is to provide honest, quality service. Yes, money is a factor, but I think it’s important to give value for they money. If a client’s book project isn’t worth top, best selling dollar, it doesn’t do anyone any good to mislead them early on. They’re going to figure it out eventually.
I want to ensure clients get value for their money, bottom line. I’ve been successful for twenty years following that as my North Star.
