We recently connected with Erica Abell and have shared our conversation below.
Erica, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
We came up with the idea of Broken Compass tiki after many nights of going out after work and chatted about what kind of restaurant we wanted. Both my business partners and myself love “tiki culture” and wanted to something a little less traditional for both a tiki bar and a restaurant. We were looking for a less corporate feel and more of a friends & family vibe. We wanted to be a neighborhood bar as well as a destination.
Erica, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Ever since I was a child I loved cooking. The kitchen was always the place I would love to retreat to during parties or social gatherings. I went to culinary school which then helped path the way to working in various restaurants. I met both my business partners working at Boneyard Bistro in Sherman Oaks, Ca. The three of us found an amazing building in Burbank, Ca about 3 years ago and revamped into an island oasis inhabited by pirates. We have a strong focus on rum and comfort food with a twist.
How’d you meet your business partner?
I met both my business partners at a previous restaurant we all worked out. The three of us banded together to create a place that isn’t just a business, it was our lives… a place we wanted to be working at.
Any advice for managing a team?
It’s always difficult managing others. As a management team we try and guild our employees but let them take lead especially if they have valuable experience. There is not a single way of doing something and understanding each person you work with has their own flow that works for them and let them be themselves feels like it breeds a happier staff.
