Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Eric Williams. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Eric, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Learning how to do what I do….that’s a difficult question to answer. The simple way to go about it is to say that I taught myself, but in doing so there are multiple trials, errors, heartbreak and struggle. There will be moments of utter brilliance and peaks upon the tallest mountains as well but the main factor I would that contributed to it is determination. If you believe in yourself that you can do anything in this world with the mindset that you’re focused, motivated and determined to do so then I believe you can do just about anything, and that’s how I view myself and my work. I’ve experienced times of heartache that made me question every decision I’ve made on this journey as it is not an easy one. Seeing yourself, being alone with yourself, questioning yourself, in and out of your artwork is something that you can’t teach someone to deal with and manage.
When it comes to what things could have helped speed up my learning process and what skills were most essential, one of the biggest things besides having that determining factor is support. And motivation. Having someone to genuinely speak to you about your work, your emotions and keep you motivated in the moments of turmoil is essential in the pursuit. This person does not have to be a fellow artist but can be someone that understands the passion that you have for your work.
Eric, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One of the most important lessons I need to unlearn was to not hyper focus when it comes to creating art. What I mean by this is to remember to enjoy what you’re doing. When it comes to creating and learning how to draw and create the things you envision it for me became easy to forget the excitement and fun that came with the reasoning on why I am drawing to begin with. When you’re stuck in the depth of teaching yourself fundamentals, developing your style, learning from masters and consistently drawing day after day, for me, I became lost in the desire to improve and focused on every particular line thinking, deleting, redrawing the same line over and over and over again. You ask yourself questions, What are the things people want to see? What was the thing that everyone appeared to like? How can I replicate that? Fun. That was something that came back to me and I needed to unlearn but begin to manage that focus and the fun all in one, developing the skill learn, improve and enjoy.
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Throughout my journey of creating my main purpose and mission has always been to do something that I love every day and to exist in that space no matter what. The moment I realized my love and appreciate for the creation of art I knew that it was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. It gave me a happiness and escape that I hadn’t felt in my life. A space that has no boundaries, a void that allows you to create anything your thought can conjure. This has driven me everyday since I began learning, it’s became a fundamental piece of my existence, days without creating and expressing my imagination begins to corrode and the very fabric that keeps me bond. But the second I’m able to draw out a random face or the pedestrian that is composed of a vast array of unique shapes that makes my mind burst with excitement brings all the life back into my soul. To anyone reading this, no matter what you want to pursue, always love what you’re doing and strive to always do that everyday.
