We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Eric Bloom a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Eric, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
When I decided to start my own practice, I don’t really think I knew what all to expect. I had prepared to the best of my ability but soon found out that there was going to be a lot of on the job learning. I made sure to reach out to other owners I knew in the industry to get an idea on where to start. That at least started me in the right direction, but I had to decide what I was going to do with the information I had.
I just celebrated six years in business, so I’ve learned a lot in that time. One of the biggest things I’ve learned was not comparing my business to other businesses similar to mine, and thinking I needed to do everything the same way they did. It is easy to get caught up, looking at other practices thinking that’s how mine needed to be, when the reality is, we may not have the same goals or interest in what we want from our business. I never wanted my business to be like anybody else’s so I needed to create my own culture and environment, and what I wanted.
If anyone wants to start their own business, I highly recommend learning from someone who has similar interests and goals that you do, and to get as much knowledge and information that you need prior to starting. You also need to understand that problems are going to arise and other things that are unexpected, but it’s all part of business. The problem isn’t the issue nor your circumstances, but how you respond to those problems that will make or break you in business.

Eric, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I grew up in Phoenix, AZ and was involved in many sports but mostly basketball. I went to San Jose State University to play basketball and received a BS in Kinesiology before going on to earn my Doctor in Physical Therapy from Duke University. I did my Orthopedic Residency at Mercer University, went from staff PT, to clinic director, to an owner of a smaller PT company before leaving and starting my own company in 2017.
I want to help patients with injuries or pain limiting their ability to live out their purpose
As the owner of Bloom Performance Rehab, my job is to build, develop and grow the individuals so every patient and staff member has success. One of the reasons I start this company was to build an environment where people want to work and patients want to come to.
I’m most proud of my team that encapsulates our company mission, vision and values.
MISSION
To be the salt and light to hurting and injured people through body restoration and transformation
VISION
To serve, optimize treatments, and invest in our clients in the most innovated and creative ways
OUR VALUES
People Over Profit, Servant Leadership, Personal Accountability, Value People Equally and Treat Them Equitably, Respectful and Humble Collaboration, All-In

Have you ever had to pivot?
Most of my time as a business owner has been to pivot due to a variety of reasons, but 2022 was an enormous pivot. We had the opportunity to open a second location at the largest sports and entertainment venue in North America. Nearly a year was invested in preparing and trying to open before we decided to leave after 10 months into the project.
To keep it simple, the direction things were going did not align with our company mission, vision and core values so it wasn’t something we wanted to stay with. Last quarter of 2022 and currently has been rebuilding mode, but it solidified the amazing team we have and the direction we want to go as a company.

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
My success is truly based on the grace and mercy of Jesus Christ and the control he has over my life. There is nothing I will or can do without him, and I have put my full trust in his power to control and sustain my business. My job is to be a good steward of what I have been given and trust His plan for my success.
The most helpful thing for me to succeed in is to truly understand and know what I can control. There are many things I can’t, so if my time is spent trying to fix it change something that I can’t control, it’s a waste of time, energy and resources.
