We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Emma Cager-Robinson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Emma below.
Alright, Emma thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I hosted a Womanist Library installation with a local organization and could see the impact being in a beautiful space had on participants. More than access to books, access to beauty shifted how participants interacted with each other and how their time in the space was spent. It occurred to me that creating media could have the same impact on how people saw themselves. There was an opportunity to create a loving mirror of Blackness for participants to view themselves through.
Emma, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I jumped into Digital Organizing when the role was incredibly new for the nonprofit world. Pre-pandemic. Thankfully I had two years to learn how to create media for the digital space before it became the primary medium for communication.
I understand my role now as the first touch, the first way that many people interact with the orgs I work with. The Digital Strategy space requires you to think in analytics and data but I try to move past vanity metrics and connect with people on a human level. I am constantly asking myself if these colors inspire the right emotions, if a video strikes the right tone, because the digital space doesn’t have to be cold-it’s a living world.
This lens is what sets me apart. I genuinely believe we have a responsibility to make the revolution irresistible.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Pay us! There are so many brilliant minds wasting energy worrying about their next meal. So much talent dies in poverty.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish I’d known how much I could learn outside a classroom. I didn’t study graphic design, I studied Philosophy, so I assumed I was out of my depth. There are countless trainings available to skill-up and get better you just have to seek them out and be diligent.
