Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Emily Rose. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Emily thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Along with taking care of clients, taking care of our team is one of the most important things we can do as leaders. Looking back on your journey, did you have a boss that was really great? Maybe you can tell us about that boss and what made them a wonderful person to work for?
I think my story is probably a little different than most. Aside from my tallow business, I manage a farm and home store with my family. My father owns it and my sister and I help manage it. I’ve worked at Big R since I was 18 and I can honestly say my dad is the best boss anyone could ever have. He has taught me so many lessons on how to treat people, how the business runs, and how to be successful. I’d like to think I’m pretty business minded and that has definitely helped Simply Made become a successful small business. Without his help and knowledge through my entire life, not just my time spent working at the store, I’m not sure if I’d be where I am today.

Emily , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi ! My name is Emily Rose. I’m a wife, a mom, and creator of Simply Made Whipped Tallow. I absolutely love what I do. I make small batches of 100% grassfed beef tallow. I found myself researching clean products when my first son was born, about 5 years ago now. I couldn’t find anything that was truly clean and worked on his sensitive skin. I came across tallow and figured I could make it myself. After making it myself for a few years, I decided to try selling a small batch. Those people got ahold of me and told me how well it worked on their skin issues or their kids eczema and I was blown away by the support. Fast forward to now, I sell my products all over the United States, and in 3 businesses here in Southern Illinois.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Beef fat is such a volatile substance. It changes based on weather, feed, or the pasture the cow is in. That makes each batch I make have subtle change in consistency. My first year selling my products, I wasn’t quite aware of how it changed my product and instead of the whipped, lotion consistency of my product, it was a hard, balm substance that people weren’t used to. I quickly learned that I have to change my recipe each time I make a batch so that it suits what my customers know and love.

Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
I absolutely love hearing from my customers! Whether it is constructive criticism or raving about my product, I enjoy hearing their opinions. I need that criticism to help me learn how to better by business and grow. I urge people to let me know if something needs changed or if they have a question to let me know so I can help!
