We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Emily Hallum. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Emily below.
Emily, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I am very fortunate to have learned the art of crochet at the age of 12 from my mom. She brought me to a little group that gathered at church to crochet together. I remember picking it up and being eager to keep practicing, learning new stitches, and creating new projects. I think the most essential skill to getting started with crochet is to have patience and determination. Without those two characteristics, it’s easy to give up and become disinterested.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi! I’m Emily, the face and name behind Emily Makes Crochet. I make sweet, heirloom quality items for littles and more! I have been crocheting since 2002, and it wasn’t until 2022 that I decided to make an Instagram account to share my creative side and build my portfolio. Honestly, I didn’t imagine that my little Instagram would blossom into a small side hustle. I truly wanted to share the beauty and intricacy of crochet! In doing so, I’ve found that others are drawn to the beauty of stitches and color, which makes it so much fun! I like to tell people that I’m your girl if you’re looking for a classic one-of-a-kind gift! Everything is handmade with lots of thought, time, and love! No item is exactly the same, and that’s what makes crochet so beautiful.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
When it comes to handmade crochet items, it can be difficult to price things for the average customer. There are so many factors to consider, such as time, materials, and if something more customized is requested. I have learned to pay attention to other crocheters as it is important for us as a crochet community to be supportive of each other. If I were to price items too low, I am undermining other crocheters who have made something similar and vice versa. Everyone in the handmade community can agree that it is important to show our value not only in what we make but also in how we represent it to our customers.

How did you build your audience on social media?
When I started my Instagram in 2022, I knew I wanted to create a space that was beautiful, happy, and aesthetically pleasing. I find that it is important to use the same lighting or filters when you can to create a space that is fun to look at. In turn, I tend to make things in certain colors that match or compliment my aesthetic. Just know that when you share something that catches the eye, people will come. It’s also about posting consistently and staying consistent to your brand. For me, that is sharing the things I make that make me proud and supporting the crochet community around me.
