We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Elle Taylor a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Elle, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I would have started sooner. I’ve been a writer from a very young age. Writing poetry. But I didn’t think I had any musical talent so I didn’t pursue that avenue. I still believe that my writing skills Trump my music ability being able to put my words to song has been everything. I didn’t start doing that until I was in my early 30s after ending a very long relationship. I had a broken heart and endured trauma and I decided I was going to teach myself to play an instrument and write songs. So I did.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My music is very authentic. I have done two music albums that were in studio and involved a lot of very talented musicians but lately I’ve just been doing demos on my porch with a voice recorder on my phone. I’ve had no voice training but I like my voice the way it is because it’s unique it’s not always perfect, neither is life. I think that I stand out of the crowd by my writing style and my voice. I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished but more so I do music to express myself and get the feelings that are inside out. Many of my songs are sad because I write when I’m down and out.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that it’s a competition. I am not here to compete with other musicians, songwriters, artists. Especially other women. No one can write my song, and I can’t write theirs. They come from our life experience, they come from where we were, they come from where we’re going. To compare one of my songs to someone else’s is like comparing an apple to an orange. Also, age. I’ve had to unlearn that as you get older it means you shouldn’t be on stage or you shouldn’t be making music. I think my music has gotten better over time, my stage performance has gotten better over time. It doesn’t matter what people think, only what you do with your life to express yourself, to find happiness
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect has been all the people that I’ve met along the way. I’ve met some very interesting people. Also having an avenue to put out songs that hopefully touch people’s hearts. I have had people tell me certain songs that have spoke to them and that means so much to me
