We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Elizabeth Faye . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Elizabeth below.
Elizabeth , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Hair Love actually started as a passion project in 2017. But what led to that started before. I had actually been teaching hair and business workshops for 3 years and had built this incredible organic community of female beauty entrepreneurs. I originally began teaching workshops because I quit a salon I was working for and being a beauty school teacher, so I decided to take my skills independently and host small workshops sharing what had helped me in my career. It started small and local and then ended up taking me all across the states and I touched thousands of lives. I felt so connected to these women, we all had so much in common. I was a single mom most of my years doing workshops and this was a place I felt so in community and not alone.
In 2017, I had a wild idea to launch a community called Hair Love. It began as Hair Love Retreat [which is our famous experience] that we began with. The idea came from my childhood. I grew up as a troubled teen and one of the most sacred and transformative things in my life as a young girl was my dad taking me hiking, camping and watching him teach yoga. Later when I was 16-years-old, I dropped out of high school and got a job as an assistant at a high end hair salon which revolutionized my world. So I thought, “what if I created this epic retreat experience for my hairstylists community and we combined the magic of both of these things”?
Hair Love was born.
The retreat was beyond life changing – 5 years later and dozens of events later here we are!
We took the magic that happens when you get out of your element and “Escape to Learn”. This is the concept of ALL of our events. We bring in wellbeing, business and hair education. Everything is centered around the community and unique learning experiences. There was genuinely NO logic in starting this, it was a heart lead project and it took over my life. We created a space where people felt so held, so loved, so seen and so connected. This project has been one of the most challenging and transformative experiences of my life. We have completely changed the entire professional beauty industry. And to think it started with a soul led calling that made no sense…is pretty magical.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My career has been filled with lots of transformation. For me personally, and for our community and clients. So NOW I am a business coach, trauma informed life coach & breathwork facilitator. I coach beauty entrepreneurs and coaches, host high level masterminds, host large retreats, host intimate healing retreats, host a podcast, creator an incredible planner, speak on stages, guide at others retreats, I just produced an independent documentary called “Hairstylists Change the World” [that you can find on Amazon Prime” and have my first book coming out next year.
But my career began as a high school dropout turned hair salon assistant, to hairstylist, to beauty school teacher, to salon owner, to educator/influencer and years later here I am today. I am proud of who I serve and the way we serve. After years of helping people with the “how to ” in business I am honored to help people on a soul level. I saw thousands of my clients getting so stuck in the “how to”, in the strategy, the spreadsheet, the day to day. I am so passionate that we help people heal their nervous system and rewire their subconscious mind so they can consciously be the type of CEO they are born to be. Getting out of their own way and stepping into their personal power is the sexiest business move you can make.
Secondly, I am so proud that I get to do this for beauty professionals and other coaches. Both of these types of entrepreneurs touch so many lives and I feel like the luckiest woman to sit behind them in their healing and business strategy. To empower them to hold space for clients, powerfully lead, show up as their most authentic self and make so much money making a difference in the world. It is pretty amazing.
My biggest learning lesson in all of this was that personal development is business development.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Wow, so during COVID pivoting was the name of the game. In fact, I have a very funny/very weird story. I had a keynote I came out with in early 2020, before the world went to hell in a handbag and the keynote was called “pivot”. No I am not kidding you. It was centered around the concept of pivoting and my love for Friends and the scene where Ross and Rachel are trying to get Ross’ new couch up their stairs in their New York apartment. So funny. Anyway, I came out with my new keynote which then became quite popular during COVID and I was singing the pivot song for quite some time and walking through my own version of pivoting hell…alongside everyone else. I was leading a community of hairstylists, who were completely shut down and I was in the business of coaching and events. So I was business and life coaching people with NO job and it was ILLEGAL for me to host events. WOW. Okay universe, what the hell do we do with this?!
I leaned in. This was a beautiful lesson for me. In a time of trial, great change, crisis, sacristy and fear…we are called upon to STEP up. To remember who we are and RISE. Instead of giving up and walking away, I stepped into radical and next level healing [which required painful and life changing shadow work]…also I choose to lead my Hair Love team and community to serve even more.
We doubled down on coaching for no extra price. We cried, we brainstormed and we processed. We knew no one held the golden key but we could be together and heal and connect together. We could be deeply creative together. And during the weekend that was supposed to be our huge Hair Love Retreat live event [which was obviously postponed] we hosted a huge digital retreat. And it was next level magical. Hairstylists from around the globe were shut down in their homes and they decorated their houses and made a retreat at home. We literally had digital dance parties, we had business panels, conversation rooms, all sorts of education, cocktail/mocktail moments, yoga, fitness and came together. It was such a testimony of the power of a community united. Hair Love was built for moments of great celebration but also moments of despair because here we were authentically connected in love.
I will always be so deeply proud of that 3 day retreat experience. From my living room and hearts to their living room and hearts we came together and we hosted a life changing digital retreat.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I shared a little bit earlier how I started with workshops. Very small and intimate. But before that I started by making content that no one cared about and being consistent for a long time.
I honestly think nowadays is such a cool time to start a business online because we are so resourced with information and strategy. I think our only downfall is there are almost TOO many resources. So my advice would be to hire the coach and join the mastermind. But make sure it is deeply aligned with who you want to step into and the life you want to lead. Remember all the strategies in the world won’t make up for poor energetics. How you feel matters. So find a way to come back into your purpose and why. It’s okay to get defeated, overwhelmed and feel like you’re hitting a brick wall. If you’re a human being and especially one who is trying to be an entrepreneur ,this is part of it and in this is GREAT healing and a chance to pivot.
So, get in with a community, get supported, don’t be afraid to change your mind at any time and lean into that deep purpose project thst your soul is knocking at you to answer the call of!
I promise it’s worth it. We get one time of this particular life time…so let’s experience all we are meant to and change some lives while doing it. [pst…the most important life you get to change if YOUR OWN!]
