We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Eli Dewitz. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Eli below.
Alright, Eli thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
In my opinion, learning an art form comes from more than just a class or lesson. Art can be inspired by many aspects of life and I think that’s the beauty of it. My parent’s enrolled me in dance class at the age of five. I was quite the entertainment for them at home, so I’m grateful that they honed in to my passions and put me in dance at an early age.
Dance was always something that I found fun and enjoyed putting my energy into. Since I had so much fun taking class, as I grew older it truly turned into a passion of mine and as you get older, the curriculum becomes more advanced. I trained primarily as a competitive dancer at my dance studio, as well as at dance conventions growing up. Our studio also brought in some amazing educators in the industry that we got to work with and that is where I felt that I grew the most. Not to mention the added competitive drive at a dance studio mixed with hard work ethic helped my advancement tremendously.
Once I moved on from high school my passion shifted from not only a dancer but to my true passion which was creating and the goal to become a choreographer. In reaching this goal I wanted to continue seeking education in different dance forms, so I moved to Los Angeles. Being able to have the exposure to so many different styles has not only helped me grow as a dancer but it has also encouraged my creative confidence in my style as a choreographer. I without a doubt would not be the artist I am today without taking those big leaps and continuing my education.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Eli Dewitz and I am a professional dancer, choreographer and educator based out of Los Angeles, CA. It is my job and passion to create safe environment’s for dancers to learn, grow and thrive. This passion comes from my personal experience as a dancer in seeing where there needs to be positive change in the industry. I teach kids anywhere from four years of age to adults and ranging from beginner to professional level dancers. On top of teaching I also choreograph for studios across the country and locally here in Los Angeles, as well as in TV and film. Some of my favorite pieces I’ve choreographed have been showcased in live shows and films. Regardless of whether I’m teaching or choreographing I find just the opportunity to get to move and connect with other dancers is what is the most fulfilling aspect to my profession. It is my main goal to leave a positive impact and share light wherever I can!

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Shop locally, eat locally, explore locally and support locally! There are so many creatives out there who have yet to be seen or given the light of day because of the busy world we live in now. Take a Sunday afternoon to walk around, go to flea markets or even find small online business’s. This is overall better for our connections in our communities and for our ecosystem!

How did you build your audience on social media?
This is something that I’m still navigating and learning more about each and every day. For the longest time I honestly avoided posting in order to protect my craft but I feel I’ve learned how to have a healthy view towards it now. The best advice I could give is just to sincerely be authentic to yourself. I don’t post out of necessity. I post because it’s something I truly want to share and feel represents me well as a person and an artist. Once you start there it’s easier to build an authentic audience that truly supports you and your art!
