We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Electra B. Frederick a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Electra B. thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
Being purposeful in the work we do is critical in life and as a creative. It’s so important to remember that as you move forward. As an artist and motivational speaker to many artists, I emphasize how imperative it is to be purposeful — whether that’s with your God-given talents and gifts or the decision to be a full-time artist. One should always make sure they have been called to do it and not just do it for the sake of going through the motions. Fulfillment is not in going through the motions. Fulfillment is in your true purpose.
I was called to be a full-time entrepreneur during a time that my mind could not logically sort out why I was doing it, but it was time to transition. I would always advise that you have enough funds available to carry out your expenses for 6 months to a year. Artist always ask “How did you become a full-time artist?” My response: All is takes is a decision.
Electra B., love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been a creative all of my life. The truth is I believe we all are very creative; we just express it our own unique way. I am a visual artist, instructor, and a motivational speaker. My private artist community is Respect The Artists and is commonly known as RTA. On my personal Instagram page, @DreamAloudArt, I have a base of supportive artists who I teach and motivate. The topic I am most passionate about speaking on is: Confidence.
The foundation of everything we do is based on trusting in our ability to do it. I’ve taught on a wide-variety of topics, but in order to flourish in any of the subjects I’ve spoken on, an artist’s confidence has to be at the right place to help launch them into success. I wrote a book titled “The Confident Artist – Six Principles to Unleash Your Creative Potential” available on Amazon. In this book, I share some keys things to reflect on in order to make sure you have a strong foundation as an artist and honestly, as a human being. My purpose and calling is to teach, encourage, and amplify as many creatives as I can!
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
The best things society can do to uplift and support creatives is to give them the opportunity to be expressive and give them the space to do so, if necessary. I have had thousands of conversations with artists around the world and most of the time their desires are beyond money — it’s the opportunity to speak, draw, paint, write, and purely express themselves, their story, or their thoughts and feelings. Next, they need the space to express themselves. Whether that’s a podcast studio or an area to paint a wall mural with an image or message that is in alignment with the values of a company — give them the opportunity and the space and I guarantee the rest will be divinely arranged for that artist to flourish.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part about being an artist is the ability to purposefully express and communicate. I view it as an act of honor and respect to the ultimate Creator – God. It is said that creativity is the ultimate expression of love and God is love. I’m blessed to be an artist, both visually and vocally. When we respect the artist within us, we can love and respect every artist we connect with, which is truly a blessing.
