We were lucky to catch up with Ejival recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ejival, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Static Discos, my record label, was founded 22 years ago as a collaborative project involving other artists in selecting and producing music. Over time, it has evolved into a solo project that still allows me to connect with like-minded individuals. I miss being part of a collective effort, sharing ideas, and dreams in a meaningful way. Although I respect individuality, I am not a big fan of it. I continue to strive for Static Discos to be a part of something larger and to share the music of the artists with festivals and music platforms. Artists from various parts of the world still find value in the label, appreciating how it aligns with their values and the effort put into promoting the music released there. I will likely continue working with the label for as long as I live. As I mentioned, I believe it is a project that goes beyond me, reflecting love and respect for creative individuals, their craft, and their love of music.
Ejival, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I used to be very skeptical about promoting music from my region. However, after getting to know musicians personally, I developed a strong empathy and became a champion of their music and art. I provide a platform for electronic musicians who want to be recognized beyond their immediate circles. Over the years, I have built strong connections with music platforms and have gained respect in music communities worldwide. I’m passionate about music and have been able to write about artists for respected publications such as WIRE, XLR8R, Rolling Stone MX, and more. I’ve also written liner notes and press releases for artists like The Nortec Collective, Murcof, and Camille Mandoki. I value the effort it takes to build professional relationships with the people I work with.I also enjoy having a great time and creating meaningful memories for the people I work with. I strongly believe in my creativity, advice, and the value it brings to both aspiring new artists and established ones.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
The independent music business is a challenging industry, with its fair share of heartbreak and financial struggles. The most important lesson I’ve learned is that this journey goes beyond just myself. It’s about opening up new opportunities for music and recognizing that creativity thrives when we work together for the common good. It can be disheartening to constantly battle against individual efforts that undermine the progress we’ve made. However, every setback teaches me to keep moving forward and to strive for the positive impact that collaboration can bring.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Society must also advocate for the rights of musicians. This fight for rights should also include support for independent venues, as well as access to healthcare and mental health services for musicians. Additionally, prioritizing education and ongoing skill development is crucial. This is why cities like Nashville attract so many creative individuals. They have recognized that supporting the economic and mental well-being of musicians within a society can have a positive impact on everyone, leading to meaningful progress for all.
