We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Edsel “TreAce” Alexander III a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Edsel “TreAce” , appreciate you joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I think that there are several determining factors for being successful. Ive noticed that mostly all successful people win the morning and have an elite discipline when it comes to not being distracted. What I mean by “win the morning” is wake up early, have a routine, and get your day started. I also think that you have to work smart to be successful. Eliminate the hard work as much as you can to free up time to do other things. Lastly, you have to have some type of crazy insane faith to believe that your dream can work and you can be successful. For me, I believe in God and know that ALL things are possible.

Edsel “TreAce” , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My love for music started as a kid. My Father played the bass and my mother sang in the church choir. But at the time, I did not know that being in the music industry would end up my career and purpose in life. I moved to Atlanta in 2000 from Cleveland, Ohio to attend Albany State University. This was one of the best decisions of my life. At the time, Atlanta’s music scene started gaining traction and it was becoming one of the hottest cities for entertainment.
In 2003 I was approached by a friend asking if I wanted to form a singing group. Initially, I declined. After further consideration, I figured, why not. We started writing and recording our own music on a basic microphone and computer, putting songs on cd’s, and passing them out to anyone who would listen. The music was not good at all.
However, I fell in love with the process of recording and songwriting. I decided after a few months, being in the spotlight was no longer my desire, so I put more focus on the songwriting part. After a few years of working on my craft, I met a manager named “Tricky” Montgomery who would put me in rooms to work with Major artists and producers. Since then, I’ve become a Grammy Nominated Songwriter who has placed several records on major recording artists as well as become a young hot music supervisor for Television and Film.
Have you ever had to pivot?
A time when I had to pivot in my career was when I went from just songwriter to CEO of V3 publishing. As I was accomplishing more, I still felt incomplete. I knew that real success came from helping other people achieve their goals. I created V3 music conference in Cleveland, Ohio where I brought music executives from all over to speak to creatives and give them an opportunity to get discovered. By doing this not only helped others, but it also gave me a fulfillment.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is sharing my God given talent to the world. God has given each of us a unique gift that we should use to bring honor to his name. Being able to live in my purpose is the most rewarding feeling. Music is healing to the soul. If I am able to write a song that is relatable to someone during a period of time that gets them through something or provides them a sweet memory, I have done my job.
