We recently connected with DYNA TUCKER and have shared our conversation below.
DYNA, appreciate you joining us today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
Making the decision to start my own private practice was an exciting and terrifying time in my career. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Marriage and Family Therapist. At the time I made the decision to go full time private practice I had worked in the Social Work field in many areas from schools to foster care to forensic Social Work for about 8 years. At the start of 2020 I made the decision to leave my fulltime job, two week later the pandemic hit and the entire country was under lockdowns. Little did I know that this lockdown would push mental health to the forefront. Starting of with just a few clients in March of 2020, by the end of the year I could not keep up with demand, as everyone, especially couples began seeking services. In 2021, I decided to expand to a group practice and hired 2 clinicians. Today I run a practice with a total of 9 clinicians including myself, and provide both in-person and telehealth services.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
At Tucker Group Practice we empower people to make the changes they wish to see in their lives by helping them confront the belief systems that have kept them from developing into their best selves. Changes that result in the confidence to go for that position, starting that business, strengthen your support system, or let go of those toxic relationships that keep pulling you down.
We work with our clients to build their confidence to succeed in your relationship and as an individual. We’ll change those negative, self-deprecating thoughts to positive self-affirming ones, turning self-doubt into self-assurance. You’ll gain the confidence to take opportunities such as jobs, dates with potential partners, and other amazing prospects. You’ll also learn how to make the tough decisions to walk away from the things that are no longer serving you, such as toxic relationships, whether they are friendships, family, intimacy, or even a job or career that is no longer fulfilling.
We also help couples move forward in their relationships. We confront challenges such as infidelity, breakdowns in communication, or loss of intimacy. We provide a space for you and your partner to communicate effectively—to be open and honest with each other. You’ll learn conflict resolution skills that will help you not only resolve past, present, and future conflicts.
We will meet you where you are. We will challenge the mindsets that keep you from being your best self. Our therapist are 100% transparent. We will hold you accountable for achieving your goals. We will make you feel comfortable while you share some of the most private pieces of your life. It is our goal to help you on this journey of becoming your best you.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Something I had to learn very early as a business owner is that it is ok to not know everything, to recognize my limitations, and most importantly to never give up. There have been so many times during the course of my of growing my business that I felt like it had become too much, and maybe I should just shut down my practice and get a ‘regular job’. Learning all of the backend stuff of running a practice showed just how much I did not know. Everyday I was learning about a different aspect of the business that I had to put in place or mistakes that I had made. What kept me from throwing in the towel was the connection I had not only with my clients but with my therapist, knowing that they all depend on me and this practice, and as cheesy as it sounds that I was truly making a difference in the lives of the people I worked with. To any new private practice owner I would say this is hard work but don’t give up, and every problem has a solution.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
If I could go back I would absolutely still choose this path. There is nothing else I could imagine doing than helping individuals and couples work through the challenges in their lives and relationships. Of all the things that are stressful about running my practice, the actual client work is not one of them. For me going to work does not feel like work at all. I could be having the absolute worst day, or dealing with my own personal issues, the moment I go into a session all of that fades to the background. Not only do I love working with my clients, but I thoroughly enjoy working with my therapist, and helping them tap into their strengths and clinicians.
