We recently connected with Dustin Kellogg and have shared our conversation below.
Dustin , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Alright, let’s jump into one of the most exciting parts of starting a new venture – how did you get your first client who was not a friend or family?
I finally started learning how to use my camera in 2020, taking pictures of paintball. I’ve always had a camera but never tried to master the craft of photography. Once I gathered up the courage to take on a customer, I posted on Instagram saying I was showing up to a tournament. The tournament was 3 hours away, didn’t know anyone and was a new photographer. I got lucky and not very many photographers showed up to the event, I showed up early and was able to book a few customers for the 2 day event.

Dustin , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My grandma is my biggest influence. She always carried a camera around and was capturing memories of our family at events. I’m born and raised in Bakersfield, CA. A lot of people in Bakersfield work in the oilfields. I worked 10 years in the industry, spending a ton of time away from my family but making enough money to support them and help my wife achieve her dream and becoming a teacher. During Covid i decided to sharpen my skills and took the leap in becoming a full time photographer. There have been a bunch of struggles but I’ve been able to help out with my family and spend quality time with them, all while doing what I love.

Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I sold my high school vehicle to start my business. 1998 Jeep wrangler. Sold it during Covid for $7000, I regret it everyday. But you live and learn. I could’ve sold it for double the asking price.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Showing up to events and building relationships with people in the industry. I show up early, deliver the exact product or go above and beyond for the customers.
