We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Duo Moolah a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Duo Moolah, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
From an artist standpoint I think we need more major label ownership and distribution. The hip hop music industry has been out since the late 70’s and 80’s and I think there should more leverage for artist. By saying that I’m saying I think the biggest challenge for a artist today that want to be a major artist some day is the ownership and percentages that a artist should make off of their own said art.

Duo Moolah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Duo Moolah, I am an Hip Hop/ Rap artist from Detroit, MI who is a a journey to become a more successful artist who has made it out of an environment where many people don’t have the opportunity or see the opportunity to make it out of. I want to give the rap game a different perspective of rap music and showcase ability that the industry may have seen before but there isn’t as much of as of late. I’m an artist who respects the grind from underground artist and I understand what it takes to build a brand, just trying to make the right connections and network and elevate as a brand and a man.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Ive been up and down throughout this journey of music, I have been rock bottom in the rap game with no direction but my resilience have showcased itself over and over. I could have quit many years ago when I was getting no traction from my music at all but I know what I want and I know it will take a lot out of me to get there. So I always focus on the journey that’s at hand and continue to push forward for my end results.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
A major impact on my journey in music and the fight to keep going was the late great music artist Nipsey Hussle. He was a big inspiration to the continuance and dedication of my music journey.
