Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dujuan Thomas. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Dujuan, thanks for joining us today. Can you tell us about an important lesson you learned in school and why that lesson is important to you?
During my time at American University Washington College of Law, I found myself in a classroom with an extraordinary range of peers—military officers, seasoned businessmen from Washington, and even former legislators. The discussions were rich with perspectives from different sectors, each voice contributing to a dynamic learning environment. It was an experience in itself to be surrounded by individuals who had already made significant marks in their careers. Yet, the most important lesson I learned wasn’t just from the people around me—it was from the curriculum itself, particularly in legislation and compliance law.
One class that really stuck with me focused on the complexities of U.S. government legislation. We studied how laws are crafted, amended, and enforced, learning not only the letter of the law but the process that drives it. What resonated deeply was how legislation, at its core, is designed to meet the needs of the people, despite the complex layers of bureaucracy. This aligned with discussions we had on attorney moral codes—understanding not only what is legal, but what is ethical and just. These principles stuck with me as I continued to work towards my degree.
Now, as a candidate for Paducah City Commission, I find that the lessons from my legal studies apply directly to this role. While city commissions operate on a more localized scale, the aim is similar—understanding the needs of the community, creating policies to meet them, and ensuring that these policies are not only legally sound but also ethically responsible. Just as we learned to dissect state & federal legislation, I now approach local government with the same rigor and sense of duty, focusing on what benefits the community while remaining true to the values of fairness and justice.

Dujuan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Dujuan Thomas, and my journey has always been about serving and uplifting my community. Born and raised in Paducah, I’ve gradually been sculpted into the leader I am today, starting with roles in business and community work, all the way to running for Paducah City Commission. Over the years, I’ve built a diverse skill set—whether it was managing logistics at Churchill Downs, overseeing partnerships with BodyArmor, or running my own business, Dujuan Thomas Productions. My focus has always been on empowering others and helping businesses and organizations, especially in our city, thrive. Now I’m channeling that experience into public office.
My campaign for Paducah City Commission is rooted in the real needs of our community. Growing up on the northside, I saw how some neighborhoods were neglected—crumbling roads, lack of resources, and a community that felt forgotten. That’s what inspired me to step into public service. I’m not in this for personal gain; I’m here to ensure that every voice in Paducah is heard. My leadership style is simple: I listen, I act, and I work with others to find solutions that benefit everyone. I believe our city deserves real action, not empty promises, and I’m committed to making that happen.
Leadership to me isn’t about the spotlight—it’s about getting results. I’ve learned through years of managing teams, organizing complex operations, and running my own business that collaboration and hard work lead to success. That’s the mindset I bring to my candidacy. I will focus on fixing our infrastructure, ensuring our neighborhoods are safe and cared for, and creating opportunities for every resident. Paducah is my home, and I’m ready to lead it into a future where every citizen feels valued, and every part of our city can thrive.

Any advice for managing a team?
When managing a team, I’ve found that the key to maintaining high morale is rooted in clear communication, trust, and empowerment. Whether it was overseeing logistics at large venues like Churchill Downs or managing operations at BodyArmor, I’ve always prioritized making sure every team member feels valued and heard. People perform at their best when they understand their role, feel supported, and have a sense of ownership in their work. I encourage open dialogue, address challenges head-on, and celebrate wins—no matter how small. Leadership isn’t just about making decisions; it’s about bringing people together toward a common goal and fostering a positive environment where everyone can thrive. I’ve seen firsthand how this approach leads to both high morale and better results, and I apply these principles to every project or team I lead, whether in business or in public service.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe what helped build my reputation within my community is a combination of my commitment to service, my diverse experiences, and my ability to deliver results. From an early age, I took on leadership roles, whether it was managing teams at Vertical Jump Park or overseeing operations at Churchill Downs. These experiences taught me the importance of reliability and consistency—two qualities that people value. Additionally, running my own business, Dujuan Thomas Productions, gave me the opportunity to directly support local businesses and ministries by providing marketing, design, and media solutions tailored to their needs. People know they can count on me to not only listen but also to execute with precision and professionalism.
What truly sets me apart, though, is my deep connection to the community. I’ve always made it a priority to be actively involved in Paducah, from my early campaign for mayor to my current run for City Commission. This blend of business acumen, leadership, and a genuine passion for serving others has built trust and solidified my reputation as someone who is both capable and committed to making a difference.
