We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Duece Carthen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Duece below.
Duece, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
High school was when I knew I wanted to be a music producer. Having a wife and family was more important to me after college. God called me back to the music business to spread his message only making music that glorifies him after my hiatus. Now I am having a blast producing, singing and creating christian content.

Duece, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I was exposed to the music business at an early age as my father was involved with many artist including legendary jazz musician Najee and a very young future legend D’Angelo. I remember attending single release party for his first single Brown Sugar, which we had a gold plaque in my living room growing up. I grew up, always wanting to have a gold album of my own to put next to it. I first started in the music business on the secular side as a rapper/producer, wanting to make anthems and create music for the clubs and radio. I am now on the Christian side and all I want to do is create music and content for Christians to consume and hear God‘s word. I don’t always use scripture and teachings but more so try to show Christ’s love and how to live. Christ like through my actions not just my words regarding content. Because of all of my experience and my network, I am happy to assist and help other Christian creative in following / accomplishing their dreams in any way that I can.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I was at church for a random alter call playing piano, and God came to me and told me to create an album that leads people to worship him the way that I worship him. I did not question what that meant. I just said OK cool how do I do that? Ever since I have been making worship music in multiple different genres to do just what I was asked to do.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Prior to coming back to the music business, I had a pretty lengthy and successful career in sales. I never had a sales job before, but because I was in the music business hearing 99 no’s before getting a yes, was a standard practice. I was then able to take that same skill set from the music business of internship and being a young artist and a young producer, and I could pretty much sell anything to anyone as long as I believed in the product. So finding the right company and a solid product became my new obsession, and I saw a lot of success that led me back to being able to creatively create music and pursue it full-time now.
