We recently connected with Dr. Teresa A. Smith and have shared our conversation below.
Dr. Teresa A., looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Taking a risk for me meant stepping fully into visibility before I felt ready. I had already built credibility as an author, editor, and strategist, but launching Talk With TAS required a different kind of courage. It meant moving from behind the scenes, shaping other people’s messages, to becoming the visible voice leading conversations in real time.
Hosting a talk show carries a unique vulnerability. You are not just asking questions. You are holding space, guiding narratives, and staying accountable to the audience. If I were going to create a platform centered on real conversations about life, growth, and purpose, I knew I had to show up authentically and consistently.
The biggest risk was not starting the show. The risk was believing my voice deserved a seat at the table. I remember going live for one of the first episodes and thinking, what if no one watches. I chose to show up anyway.
That decision shifted everything. I committed to weekly consistency, refined my delivery, and focused on impact rather than numbers. Over time, Talk With TAS and Real Talk with TAS and OnJerya became spaces where transparency, strategy, and empowerment meet. That leap into visibility opened doors to media coaching, speaking engagements, and strategic partnerships.
My biggest lesson is this: sometimes the real risk is not launching the platform at all. It is staying hidden when you know you are called to lead.

Dr. Teresa A., love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Dr. Teresa A. Smith, professionally known as Dr. TAS. I am a talk show host, public visibility strategist, media coach, executive editor, and seven-time Amazon bestselling author. My work centers on helping thought leaders, authors, entrepreneurs, and creatives show up with clarity, confidence, and credibility.
My path into this work evolved organically. As an author and editor, I spent years helping people refine their stories and strengthen their message. What I noticed over time was not a lack of talent, but a lack of preparation for visibility. Brilliant people were being overlooked or misunderstood because they were unprepared for the rooms they entered. That realization changed everything.
It led me beyond the page and into media. I am the creator and host of the Talk With TAS Show and co-host of the exclusive IG Live series Real Talk with TAS and OnJerya. These platforms were created to hold intentional conversations around growth, resilience, leadership, faith, and purpose. They are spaces where real dialogue happens and authentic voices are centered.
Behind the scenes, I serve as Executive Editor and Contributing Writer for Conversations Magazine. My editorial background allows me to help clients refine their message before they step into interviews, speaking engagements, or public platforms. Preparation always comes before exposure.
What sets me apart is my strategic approach to visibility. I believe exposure without preparation can damage credibility. Through visibility strategy, media coaching, editorial services, interview preparation, and show development, I help clients communicate with confidence and lead with intention.
I am most proud of building platforms that help people find their voice and use it responsibly. Whether I am on screen, on stage, or working behind the scenes, my mission remains the same: to help people overcome self-doubt, clarify their message, and step into the spaces they were called to occupy.
At the core of my brand is this belief: visibility is not about being seen everywhere. It is about being seen strategically and authentically where it matters most.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I built my social media audience by prioritizing trust over trends. When I launched Talk With TAS, I did not chase virality or algorithms. I treated every live conversation as a real room with real people, even when the numbers were small. My focus was service. I showed up prepared, asked intentional questions, and spoke directly to leaders, authors, and creatives who were ready to grow.
In the early stages, engagement was modest. I stayed consistent anyway. I approached each session with the same discipline I would bring to a national platform. Over time, that consistency built credibility. People do not just follow content. They follow conviction.
Authenticity also mattered. I share real lessons and lived experiences without performing for attention. That honesty created a connection, and that connection created a community.
My advice for anyone just starting is simple:
• Start with clarity, not perfection.
• Speak to a specific audience, not everyone.
• Build relationships, not just numbers.
• Show up consistently, even when it feels quiet.
• Refine your message before you magnify it.
Social media is only a visibility tool. Strategy is what turns visibility into impact.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What helped me build my reputation in my market is character-driven consistency paired with strategic intention. I grew up hearing a poem called Reputation vs. Character, often recited by Harold C. Smith, a mortician and politician in Anson County, North Carolina. One line stayed with me: reputation is what you are supposed to be, character is what you are. That distinction shaped how I approached my work long before anyone was watching.
My reputation was built through editorial excellence and integrity. As an executive editor and writer, I learned early that words shape perception. I take messaging seriously because clarity, credibility, and preparation are nonnegotiable. That discipline carried into my media platforms and coaching work.
Consistency has also been key. Whether through my books, Talk With TAS, or one-on-one client work, I show up prepared and intentional. Over time, that consistency builds trust, and trust builds reputation.
I am also very deliberate about positioning. I do not believe in visibility without alignment. I am selective about collaborations and intentional about the conversations I host. Every platform, partnership, and appearance reflects my mission to help people show up with confidence, clarity, and credibility.
Most importantly, I focus on impact over applause. When clients feel prepared for interviews, when authors gain confidence in their message, and when conversations genuinely shift perspective, that is what sustains a strong reputation.
For me, reputation is not built by being everywhere. It is built by being excellent where you are planted.
