We were lucky to catch up with Dr Erika McCormick recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr Erika , thanks for joining us today. In our experience, overnight success is usually the result of years of hard work laying the foundation for success, but unfortunately, it’s exactly this part of the story that most of the media ignores. So, we’d appreciate if you could open up about your growth story and the nitty, gritty details that went into scaling up.
When people look at Abundant Living Consulting Corporation today, they often see the polished brand, the multiple business divisions, the successful clients, the speaking engagements, the real estate ventures, and the financial literacy initiatives. What they do not always see are the years of building, restructuring, learning, sacrificing, and surviving that happened before any of it looked successful.
Scaling a business was never one big moment for me. It was a series of intentional decisions. In the beginning, I was doing almost everything myself. I was the coach, the strategist, the administrator, the marketer, the accountant, and sometimes even the emotional support system for my clients. Like many entrepreneurs, I started with skill and passion, but I had to learn how to build infrastructure. One of the biggest turning points for me was realizing that scaling is not just about increasing revenue. It is about increasing capacity without compromising quality, mission, or vision.
One of the first strategies that helped me scale was diversification. I stopped viewing my business as a single service company and started building an ecosystem. Under Abundant Living Consulting Corporation, we expanded into multiple divisions including business consulting, tax strategy, credit restoration, financial literacy education, business coaching, and entrepreneurial development programs. That shift allowed us to serve clients at different stages of their journey instead of solving only one problem. If a client came to us needing taxes done, we could also help them repair their credit, structure their business, improve operations, or prepare for funding opportunities. Creating a full-service ecosystem increased both impact and sustainability.
Another major shift was systems and process development. Many small businesses struggle because the owner becomes the bottleneck. I had to document workflows, automate client onboarding, implement CRM systems, structure consultation processes, and create repeatable frameworks. I began treating my business like an enterprise before it looked like one financially. That mindset changed everything. I learned that scaling requires operational maturity long before the revenue catches up.
There were also difficult moments that forced growth. I experienced business setbacks, financial pressure, partnership disappointments, and periods where I questioned whether the workload was worth it. There were seasons where I had to lead while exhausted, build while healing, and make executive decisions with very limited resources. Entrepreneurship teaches you quickly that resilience is not motivational language. It is survival. Some of my biggest lessons came from mistakes involving overextending myself, not delegating soon enough, trusting the wrong people, or trying to grow too fast without the right operational support underneath the business.
What also helped me scale was understanding the power of relationships and visibility. I invested heavily into community presence, partnerships, sponsorships, educational workshops, and public speaking. I stopped waiting for opportunities and started creating platforms of my own. We created programs, academies, workshops, and events that positioned us as a trusted authority rather than simply another service provider. Scaling is not only about sales. It is about credibility, consistency, and building a reputation that compounds over time.
One of the most meaningful parts of my journey is that I never wanted success to only benefit me personally. I wanted to create economic impact. Many of the people we serve are first generation entrepreneurs, underserved communities, veterans, women, and families trying to rebuild financially. As we scaled, our mission became bigger than profit. We focused on helping people build businesses, repair their financial foundation, access opportunities, and create generational wealth. That purpose kept me grounded during difficult seasons and gave the business a deeper sense of direction.
If there is one thing I would tell entrepreneurs about scaling, it is this: stop chasing the appearance of growth and focus on building structure. Real scaling happens when your business can operate effectively beyond your direct involvement in every single detail. It requires leadership development, systems, financial discipline, emotional intelligence, and the willingness to evolve personally as your business evolves professionally.
The truth is, there was no overnight success. There were years of unseen sacrifices, long nights, hard decisions, failures, pivots, reinvention, and faith. But every phase taught me something necessary for the next level. Scaling was not about becoming bigger. It was about becoming stronger, smarter, more intentional, and more sustainable.

Dr Erika , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Dr. Erika McCormick, and I am a business and wealth coach, entrepreneur, executive leader, author, and the CEO of Abundant Living Consulting Corporation. At my core, I am someone who is passionate about helping people transform their lives through business ownership, financial literacy, strategic leadership, and generational wealth building. Everything I have built has been centered around creating impact, access, and opportunity for people who may not have traditionally had access to the resources, education, or mentorship needed to succeed.
My journey into entrepreneurship and consulting came from seeing firsthand how many talented individuals had great ideas but lacked the structure, guidance, and financial knowledge to turn those ideas into sustainable businesses. I began working with entrepreneurs, families, and aspiring business owners to help them understand not only how to start businesses, but how to operate them strategically, build business credit, create financial stability, and position themselves for long term success. Over time, that vision evolved into a multi division business ecosystem that now includes business consulting, tax strategy, financial literacy programs, credit restoration services, entrepreneurial education, leadership coaching, and wealth building initiatives.
One thing that sets me apart is that I do not just teach theory. I actively build businesses, lead organizations, manage enterprise level projects, and create systems that produce real world results. My clients know they are receiving practical strategies backed by experience, not just motivation. I have worked across multiple industries including business consulting, finance, technology, government contracting, real estate, entrepreneurship development, and executive leadership. That broad experience allows me to help clients solve problems from both a strategic and operational perspective.
At Abundant Living Consulting Corporation, we focus heavily on helping entrepreneurs create strong foundations. Many business owners are operating in survival mode without systems, structure, financial strategy, or long term planning. We help bridge those gaps. Whether it is business formation, funding preparation, operational development, tax planning, leadership coaching, or financial literacy, our mission is to help clients move from simply owning a business to building sustainable wealth and legacy.
I am especially proud of the impact our work has had within underserved and economically disadvantaged communities. For me, success has never only been about revenue. It has always been about empowerment. We work with aspiring entrepreneurs, single mothers, veterans, young business owners, and families trying to break generational cycles financially. Seeing clients purchase homes, launch successful businesses, improve their credit, secure funding, or create opportunities for their families is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.
Another major part of our success has been the strength of our leadership team, especially my business partner and CFO, Jasmine Liburd. Jasmine has truly been the backbone of the business in many ways. While I often lead the vision, strategy, and public facing aspects of the company, Jasmine ensures that the operational and financial foundation remains strong. Every growing business needs someone who can bring structure, accountability, and stability behind the scenes, and she has been instrumental in helping us scale responsibly and sustainably. Her dedication, financial leadership, and commitment to excellence have played a critical role in our growth and long term success.
What I want people to know most about me and my brand is that authenticity matters deeply to me. I believe in transparency about the realities of entrepreneurship. I believe in building businesses with integrity. I believe in creating impact that extends beyond social media appearances or temporary success. My goal is to help people build businesses and lives that create freedom, stability, legacy, and purpose.
I also want people to understand that entrepreneurship is not just about making money. It is about creating options, ownership, influence, and opportunities not only for yourself but for future generations. That philosophy is the foundation of everything we build under our brand.
Whether through coaching, consulting, speaking, educational initiatives, books, or business development, my mission remains the same: to empower people to move from survival to strategy, from struggle to structure, and from simply making income to building lasting wealth and legacy.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe one of the biggest things that helped me build my reputation within my market was consistency and authenticity. I never focused solely on selling services. I focused on genuinely helping people solve problems and providing real value. Over time, that creates trust, and trust is one of the most powerful currencies in business.
From the beginning, I made it a priority to educate people, not just market to them. Whether through workshops, social media content, business coaching, financial literacy programs, tax strategy education, or entrepreneurship mentorship, I wanted people to feel empowered after interacting with my brand. A lot of business owners only show the highlight reel, but I have always tried to be transparent about both the victories and the realities of entrepreneurship. I think people connect with authenticity because they can tell when someone truly cares about impact versus just profit.
Another major factor was results. Word of mouth became one of the strongest drivers of our growth because clients began seeing tangible outcomes. People were improving their credit, launching businesses, securing funding, increasing profitability, buying homes, and building more stable financial futures. When people see consistent results and hear genuine testimonials from others, your reputation naturally begins to expand within the community.
I also believe visibility and community involvement played a major role. I intentionally stayed active within the community through partnerships, sponsorships, educational events, speaking engagements, and mentorship opportunities. I did not want to just build a business people recognized online. I wanted to build a brand people genuinely trusted offline as well.
Most importantly, I think my reputation was built because I lead with purpose. Everything I do is rooted in helping people build structure, stability, wealth, and legacy. People can feel when your work is connected to something bigger than yourself, and I believe that sense of purpose is what has allowed my brand to grow organically and sustainably over time.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has honestly been relationship building combined with education based marketing. I learned early on that people do business with people they trust, especially in industries tied to finances, business development, and wealth building. Instead of focusing only on advertising services, I focused on becoming a resource and creating genuine connections with people and the community.
A large part of our growth came from educating our audience consistently. We provide valuable information through workshops, business coaching sessions, social media content, financial literacy programs, webinars, community events, and mentorship initiatives. When people feel informed and empowered, they naturally begin to trust your expertise. Many of our clients initially came to us because they learned something valuable from our content or attended one of our educational events before ever becoming paying clients.
Referrals and word of mouth have also been extremely powerful for us. When you consistently produce results and treat people with integrity, your clients become your biggest advocates. Some of our strongest business growth has come from existing clients referring family members, business partners, friends, and colleagues because they personally experienced the impact of our services. That taught me the importance of client experience. Every interaction matters because people remember how you made them feel throughout the process.
Another strategy that helped tremendously was creating an ecosystem of services instead of offering just one isolated solution. Through Abundant Living Consulting Corporation and our related brands, we are able to help clients at multiple stages of their journey. Someone may initially come to us for tax preparation, but then transition into business coaching, credit restoration, business formation, financial literacy education, or wealth building strategies. Because we focus on long term relationships instead of one time transactions, clients continue growing with us over time.
I also believe consistency played a major role. Building clientele is not about one viral moment. It is about consistently showing up, consistently serving people well, consistently delivering results, and consistently building credibility over time. Many people underestimate how powerful consistency becomes when paired with purpose and excellent service.
Most importantly, I have always approached growth from a place of impact instead of desperation. I genuinely want people to succeed. I think clients can feel that authenticity, and it creates stronger relationships, stronger retention, and a stronger overall brand reputation.
