Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Douglas Kenney. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Douglas, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I’m Doug Kenney. I’m a podcaster, author, Jersey Mike’s crewman. I run the “R-U Relentless and Unstoppable?” YouTube channel. It began after I lost a lot of weight after battling obesity, and overcoming a severe soda addiction. After a lengthy detox, my quality of life improved and my mentor and coach Andy McPhee was inspired by my journey and came up with the R&U platform where we share stories of resilience.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We are a positive platform about stories of positivity. We have the R&U podcast where I interview people on their journeys and overcoming of hardships. We hope to inspire people with our guests and their achievements. We are primarily on YouTube. I’m proud of having broken through to 1,000,000 views after five years. I’m also proud of the amazing people I have met on the way. I’m also proud that I went from living with Mom for years, to getting a major employment at Jersey Mike’s subs.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I connected with people at public events and invited them to share their stories on R&U. I also reached out to film producers, directors, and ordinary people on Facebook to invite them as guests. Among the people I’ve interviewed are the producer of The Prince of Egypt, the director of the Lion King, the director of The Tigger Movie, the producer of Pocahontas, Beauty and the Beast, and many other major film people. I took advantage of the global pandemic to connect with them when they were using Facebook more often.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I almost committed career suicide as a young teenager when I was hostile to the world and cyber-bullied people on social media. It cost me relationships and I had to show my resilience by learning from the three year period of wrongdoing, and letting my actions speak. I later became an anti-bullying activist.
