We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Doug Burns. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Doug below.
Doug, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I’ve always been a musician for as long as I can remember. But it wasn’t until about 15 years ago that I decided to go solo. It was at that time that I realized how little I knew about working solo and how to maximize that role. I probably should have spent more time collaborating with other similar creative types because that might have sped up the process for me. But I learned the hard way how to do what I do. Thanks to some intuition and tenacity I was able to get to where I am now..

Doug, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a guitar player, song writer and performer. I play other instruments as well but that’s my strong suit. I worked in bands until about 15 years ago when I decided to go solo. I’m very grateful because of the many contacts I already had in the music world which made it easier for me to navigate where I needed to be and how to get there. Working solo you have to remain disciplined to keep things fresh and you always have to be creating content and performing. I’ve been lucky to have some great opportunities to play with some national acts and also have developed a following of my own. I think it’s taking me a while to develop my sound but I couldn’t be happier with where I’ve landed. It’s 100% me.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
By far the most rewarding aspect of being a creative person is the what I get to do. Unfortunate that I get the opportunity to play for different crowds at different venues throughout the year. When you have people listen to your music and tell you that they really enjoy it and relate to it it’s very special. Also, when you see people singing along to your songs there’s nothing better.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Being a creative means that we rely entirely on others to support what we do. Working in the world of music my wish is that people will continue to support live music and live entertainment. I would also hope that they avoid AI as a source of entertainment as much as possible especially as it pertains to the creative side as well as the performance.
