Dominic and Serena, appreciate you joining us today. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
We always talk about how we wish we had started our business sooner. Our business was started out of necessity. Serena had just been let go from a corporate job and Dominic was working at a non-profit. With 3 small children, we had to get creative. With our background in events, Dominic decided to start DJing again on the weekends. It took about a year for him to leave his full-time position and pursue the business. Once we both jumped in full-time, the momentum was astonishing. It does make us think, “where would we be if we had started sooner?”.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Our local business, At Last Entertainment and Events, services events in the greater San Antonio area with planning and DJ services. We started our experience in the event industry when we lived in Northern California almost 20 years ago. Dominic has a love for entertaining and music, so being a wedding DJ just makes sense. Serena loves helping bring a couple’s vision to life through her position as a wedding planner. We care so deeply for our clients and even though we now have a team, that is the #1 thing that sets us apart…we care. We have trained our team to give over the top customer service. This is someone’s wedding! You only get one shot to give them a memorable experience.
We have a secondary brand known as The Wedding Duo. Being a husband/wife team, who sincerely loves what we do, we felt we could do more for the industry. As The Wedding Duo, we have an amazing online presence that started on TikTok. We share helpful tips and real wedding inspiration with our following. Creating content for couples and other industry professionals has been extremely rewarding. We now also have a podcast and offer some great virtual resources to couples anywhere!
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Our TikTok account now has almost 350k followers. We have found that there are two ways to grow your social media following:
Being entertaining
Being educational
If you can go one step further and combine those two things…that’s the sweet spot. When we started our account we were throwing out content to see what would work. When we noticed certain things resignating with people, we would go further into those topics. It’s also important that your audience gets to know you, that you show up consistently, and try to engage with them whenever possible.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
We are obsessed with customer service! You can be amazing at what you do, but if you don’t get back to people or have a bad attitude…it really doesn’t matter. In our industry, this is unbelievably important. Couples are trusting us with one of the most important days in their life. They want to connect and feel confident in our capabilities. Your reputation as a small business is everything and how you treat people will tell that tale.
