We caught up with the brilliant and insightful DJ Hustle a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

DJ , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.

Juggling three jobs and heading to auditions was my way of life for years, It was the life of a striving actor. Driving across town to call backs on my supposedly lunch break that rarely got me back to work in an hour. I started booking commercials that place me at a crossroad. One choice was to continue this hectic lifestyle and the other choice was to take a leap of faith to dedicate my life to acting. I chose the latter. So I quit my job and focused on acting full time. I was extremely excited to dedicate every minute to practicing my lines. Eventually the seriousness of taking this risk got deeper by the day. I went through days of soul searching while I chased my dream. The real experience of dream chasing comes with the price of facing daily trials of not having the basic life necessities. I stuck it through, kept my faith, and soon enough my blessings arrived. I started booking national commercials and I was able to invest in myself by attending acting classes. My journey took an upward turn by perfecting my acting skills well enough to sustain a healthy and thriving career and lifestyle. My DJ business also connected with my acting career. In fact, I played a role as a DJ in my first SAG commercial. That was my confirmation that I chose the right path at that crossroad and I have not look back since.

DJ , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

My high school track coach was the first to call me Hustle. I was always early to practice and led the team on basketball drills. My first gig was my high school dance that named me was off a random question of what to call me for the night. Someone yelled out, “DJ Hustle!”. I took pride in my name because it represented punctuality, leadership, and an enjoyable person be around. During my college years I DJ’d parties and strengthened my skills on the turntables. This was the start to my company, Hustle Events. My clientele expanded quickly. I performed for celebrities and DJ’d Bar Mitzvahs, sometimes on the same day! Personally, as a DJ and business owner I dedicate my focus on my clients and their guests to give them a memorable experience. I know they place their trust in me that I never take for granted. Knowing this, I set a high expectation for myself and my team to be professional, attentive, and energetic throughout the event. We represent Hustle Events.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?

Hustle Events also had a TV show HustleTV. For years we would conduct red carpet interviews, movie premieres and recording studio sessions with artists. Our brand was getting recognized in the media community, until the pandemic. The world shutdown, and so did we, very quickly. HustleTV turned to video conferencing to connect with artists and actors to promote their content. At the same time, I pivoted to photography and drone projects. I started looking into real estate drone photography and wrote a children’s book as a way to explore opportunities.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
