We were lucky to catch up with Diana Giovinazzo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Diana, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
There is nothing safe about writing a novel. Every time I set out to tell another story, it feels a bit like jumping off a cliff. As a writer, I am always wondering if a publisher will purchase my next book or if the next book will be well received. In a way, being in this industry feels like being an adrenaline junkie. Every novel comes with its own form of risk. It’s beautiful and terrifying all at the same time.

Diana, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
For as long as I can remember I wanted to be a fiction writer. However, it wasn’t until I started to research my family’s history and the questions of how they came to the United States turned into why they came to the United States. Soon I became extremely interested in Italian history and realized that historical fiction was the genre for me.
I am incredibly proud of both novels which have shed light on little-known women such as Anita Garibaldi who was the heroine of two continents and Queen Maria Carolina Charlotte, one of the few women to stand up to Napoleon. There is so much that can be learned from these women and to be able to step into their skin, for just a little bit is a humbling experience.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
First and foremost, buy their art. And if you want to support a writer, be sure to leave a review. Reviews go a long way in terms of marketing for the author, particularly behind the scenes.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
There are so many stories that I want to tell, so many women who are on the verge of being lost to history. These stories deserve to have their moment and I want to be the one who tells them. Likewise, writing is how I make sense of the world around me, it’s a part of who I am and I can’t imagine not writing.
