We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Diamond Tubaya a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Diamond, appreciate you joining us today. We love asking folks what they would do differently if they were starting today – how they would speed up the process, etc. We’d love to hear how you would set everything up if you were to start from step 1 today
If I was to start over, I would definitely take myself more seriously in the beginning. Things I would do differently would be promote myself more , network with local business owners and truly show my talent. In the beginning I wasn’t doing that and I had to learn that people will only take me as serious as I take myself. I honestly don’t think there is a way for me to have gotten where I am any faster. I’m grateful for the journey I’ve experienced and currently experienced. If anything I feel like capital has increased since I’ve started , supplies and quality of products definitely has increased cost wise.
Diamond, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
About 4 years ago I was working at a local grocery store as a cashier and they moved me to the bakery department . During that time I was taught the basics of decorating, as time grew on my skills improved impressively and I gained a passion for decorating. In 2019 I took the leap of faith and quit my job to start my own cake business , which is now Dreamy Desserts by Diamond. The start of my journey was rocky because I absolutely had no clue how to run a business , literally learning as I go but I was determined. Dreamy Desserts is all about custom cakes and treats for any occasion you may have ! Our luxury treats are also available for shipping nationwide! A problem I solve for my clients is the stress free experience I give them . Often people stress about what a cake may look like or worry that it won’t be done in time and I reassure them I’m here to make their event even more memorable. I also solve their problems if they forget to order a cake and need something last minute but with great taste and quality! The thing I’m most proud of is my work ethic and dedication to my business. I’m very proud of the growth I’ve had over these past 3 years , 3 years ago I wouldn’t have believed where I am today. Some main things I would want everyone to know is , I’m 24 with a 6 year old son and I’m very passionate about what I do , this is not just a hustle or quick buck for me I love my business with everything in me. My business is not a standard cake business , the great quality designs match the great quality taste ! One day soon you’ll be seeing Dreamy Desserts across a store front !
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I built my audience on social media by consistently promoting everything I made . Whether it was a crazy dessert combination I made or a simple chocolate cake I promoted it. Even if it only got 2 likes I kept promoting , my advice to anyone that’s starting to build their social media presence is to make you a content schedule. I definitely recommend to post daily and consistently no matter how much interaction you get . Someone is always watching you , even when you think no one is.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I believe my clientele has helped build my reputation the most, word of mouth is everything these days . Without their honest reviews or even the trust for me to do their cakes I wouldn’t be where I am today. Within my market my reputation is just as good because I’m always open to talk to other cake artists and having a good relationship with them as well !
