We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dï Thomas. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dï below.
Dï , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I have worked on would be directing, writing, filming, and producing my first feature film “Seen.” It was originally written as a short film, a sequel to my first short film “See Me.” A film covering the struggles of the main character Miller transitioning (FTM) with not only himself, but with his relationships with others. “See Me” was successful in the film festival circuit and I received a lot of positive feedback from those who either could relate to the storyline or appreciated how the story was told to answer a lot of questions that they may have had. When I started production for “Seen,” I wanted it to have an even bigger impact than “See Me” did. I would film and simultaneously add scenes, because I felt that more dialogue needed to take place or topics needed to be discussed more in depth. Before I knew it, I had my first feature film in the works. This is one topic that not only needs more representation in the film industry, but also needs more dialogue and support. I am hoping that my films can continue to be used to create more safe spaces for that.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am an award winning international filmmaker, director, screenwriter, and producer based in Atlanta, Georgia. At an early age I developed a love for visual art and silent films. I creatively use my platform to create content that will give those that lack representation a voice to be heard and seen. My signature unique artistic vision distinguishes my work from the norm. I enjoy finding the beauty in things that most overlook, especially helping others to find the beauty within themselves. Whether it be through photography or directing them to deliver a scene with emotions that they did not know they had within.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is being able to use my platform to inspire others to be themselves just by authentically being myself. Whether I am directing a project that is about representation or writing a script to be a voice for those who do not feel seen, I know that the end result is going to have a positive impact on others. If I can make a difference or inspire just one person, that is all that I need to keep creating.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
One of the things that I promised my grandmother before she passed, is that I would use my art to inspire others. I can still remember the smile on her face after I said that. She played a major role in who I am today. I honor her and my promise everyday, especially through my art.
