We were lucky to catch up with Devin Grindrod recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Devin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of the toughest things about entrepreneurship is that there is almost always unexpected problems that come up – problems that you often can’t read about in advance, can’t prepare for, etc. Have you had such and experience and if so, can you tell us the story of one of those unexpected problems you’ve encountered?
When I started my business almost 6 years ago, I came into it a bit naive. I was under the assumption that as a solo-preneur my business and I were separate entities and boy was I wrong. No truer words will ever be spoken about entrepreneurship than “your business is a reflection of you.” Your money problems are your business’ money problems. Your level of worthiness is your business’ level of worthiness. Your fear of success/failure is your business’ fear of success/failure, and so on. So the biggest unexpected problem I’ve had in building my company is working through my personal issues in order to attain and maintain success.
As a business owner or someone who wants to start a business, the best thing you can do to ensure success is keep on doing massive work towards your self-improvement. Sure knowing how to run a business, filing taxes, customer service, etc are important, but it is quite possible none of that, will exist until you overcome your limiting beliefs. When I figured out this connection is when I began seeing more success in what I was putting my energy towards.
There are many different ways to overcome your limiting beliefs. What has helped me the most is identifying them. Naming them out loud and seeing how these beliefs are affecting me in my day to day life. Additionally, imagining that I am already living the life of my greatest success. Stepping into the confidence of your most authentic self helps you to visualize the life you aspire to lead in a more detailed way.
The technique that has been most helpful in overcoming my limiting beliefs easily and effortlessly has been quantum time technique (QTT). QTT allows you to find the root of your belief, understand where it came from, and retain the wisdom of it while releasing the limitations it has posed on to you. On the quantum level, time and space don’t exist so you are able to let go of the past while aligning yourself with your desired future. You are literally able to design your dream life. As a business owner, no skill is more important than growth. QTT helps you to grow in ways you didn’t know were possible.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi friends, my name is Devin and I started my spiritual business in 2016. I felt called to step out of the corporate world and into entrepreneurship after finding Reiki. It was one of those experiences where everything felt aligned and I was being called to take the next step. I am a Reiki master and evidential psychic medium. There are currently two aspects to my business. In one leg, I am a practitioner and help people to overcome trauma so they can step into their most authentic selves. Other the other I train people to become Reiki masters and help them to start their own spirit-led business.
What sets me apart from others is my training. I have a BA in Psychology from San Diego State University where I spent three years in research labs being mentored in trauma-informed practices. From there I worked in the mental health field, again with a strong emphasis in trauma-informed ethics. After I left that position and started Spiritually Balanced, I have continued my education in trauma-informed practices in fields like yoga and energy work. Having been involved in several different settings of trauma-informed services I have a strong knowledge on how to hold space for my clients, understand my scope of practice, as well as teach others these same values.
Helping someone navigate their healing journey will always be where my heart lies in my industry. What I have noticed though is the same desire in others, but a lack of resources in which to develop the necessary skill set to confidently do so. I work with other practitioners to help them gain the confidence they need to overcome their limiting beliefs while mentoring them in how to facilitate trauma-informed sessions while running a heart-centered, service-based business.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Much of my adult life, both personally and professionally, until recently has been a series of pivots. I pivoted degrees and education trajectories, goals, desired careers, and even the direction of my business. For as long as I can remember I wanted to be a teacher, but when I got to college and began taking my education courses something just didn’t feel right so I switched to psychology (which had previously been something I thought was a made up industry, but that’s another story for another day). After switching to a psych major I fell in love with learning about the mind and human behavior. I had finally found my people and I was going to become a forensic psychologist!
When I graduated with my BA I decided to take some time off to gain field experience and get married. During the fall of 2015 I applied to graduate school and was told I was essentially a “shoe in” for the program. The director even asked me to be on her research team. My new husband and I wanted to take some time off of life before things became hectic and we traveled to Southeast Asia for a few months. Shortly before leaving Reiki found me and my life started to change in the most magical of ways.
A few days into our trip East, I received an email stating that I was not going to be accepted into the graduate program. I felt lost, but also strangely grounded an aligned. Throughout the rest of our trip I did some massive soul searching and decided to start a Reiki business. Mind you I had no idea how to start, operate, and grow a business, but I knew that would all come in due time.
When we returned to the states, I opened up shop and began my entrepreneurial journey. Since then I have pivoted from solely working in addiction recovery facilities to boutique workout studios to entirely virtual during the last three years, which is where I found my home and my niche. Not to mention my husband and I also moved halfway across the country to Texas, where I had to start my business over again. My preferred style of Reiki to practice has always been distance, so the virtual adjustment was an easy one for me to make. Over the last year I have worked to create several online courses that help people develop spiritual hygiene practices, become a grounded empath, sharpen their psychic skills, and my most recent addition has been virtual Reiki training courses.
As you can see, I have been pivoting constantly, but each step that I take has been built upon the last. Currently I am combining my passions of teaching with the virtual courses and human behavior as I help my clients navigate their trauma healing journeys. My biggest piece of advice to someone who is in the middle of their pivots is to not lose hope. Have faith that this chapter of your life is meant as a precursor to your next. Everything is unfolding exactly as it needs to.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Hustle culture has been my biggest unlearning as an entrepreneur. I grew up on a farm in upstate New York. As a farmer’s daughter I saw my Dad work from before the sun rose to well after it set for much of my life. His dedication and passion for his craft was inspiring to me. He never seemed to run out of energy and he always had a smile on his face for his friends, family, and clients.
When I started my business, I knew that freedom of my time and income were two of my biggest “why” drivers. The conflicted message between the need to give everything I had to my business while desiring a strong work/life balance was a constant battle in my mind. It has taken several years for me to learn that taking the afternoon off is a major benefit of being the steward of your schedule.
Over the last few years I’ve learned to find more balance between getting things done and leaving time for joy. My ideal schedule is a 20-hr work week and I am slowly making my way there. As entrepreneurs we have the freedom to automate tasks, delegate work, and embrace the freedom we desire. This is something I am whole heartedly enjoying.
