Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Detrich Swain. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Detrich, appreciate you joining us today. Looking back, what’s an important lesson you learned at a prior job?

The most important lesson I’ve learned from a past job that has helped me as a business owner is…to invest time and money into your own-self the same as you would a 9-5.

Detrich, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

Well…my name is Detrich Swain but when I’m in artist mode my name is Dee D$b, pronounced Dee Dub. I’m originally from NC but I now reside in GA. I got into two different businesses/industries. I have a bachelor’s in Business Management and a MBA. This allowed me to be in my daytime job as a Supply Chain specialist but in my spare time I enjoy writing, creating and recording Hip Hop music. I once had my own business with my business partner where we made music, videos, sold clothing, wristbands and put together school drives. But it didn’t work out the way we wanted so I’m just doing things solo as of now and just going with the flow. I am a great writer from school papers to rap songs and hooks, I can write just about anything. So anyone reading this…if you want to collaborate on a project of any type or need something written for you, please contact me. Any beat maker reading this, please contact me cause I am looking for beats to rap on. I am also registered on BMI as a songwriter and I have songs on all major streaming services. I have done radio interviews and of course I’ve been featured in this magazine before. If you google my name you’ll be able to see my past work and interviews. What I am most proud of is my wife and children. Nothing material could ever equate to what my family means to me. I want people to know that I’m a really cool stand up guy and I am a man of my word. I am very professional and I would be a great unproblematic person to work with. At the time of this interview I am 46 years old. I make age appropriate rap music but I believe the younger crowd can relate to it too because I give them jewels and I show them how to move as you age in this unforgiving world. I’m on a mission to help remove this ageism stigma on Hip Hop music and just in life in general.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?

A time I had to pivot in business, career and life is when my business partner caught a charge and had to go away for lil bit. I was left on my own really trying to figure it out. I had to jump back to the 9-5 sector but thankfully God blessed me with the ability and smarts to be able to do that. Along this journey I was hospitalized for a while and honestly thought I wouldn’t make it out of there at one point. I had started having talks with my wife about if I don’t make it out. But when I did get out and got back to better health. My family and I relocated to the Atlanta Ga area from Savannah Ga area. We just needed a change and something more challenging. As great as Savannah had been for us. I just felt like I had reached my peak there and accomplished all I could and I wasn’t growing. Whenever I feel like I can’t spread my wings and grow, then I will remove myself and go where I can elevate more. I have been through some rough things but it has all brought me closer to God.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?

The most effective strategy for growing my clientele is just getting my music and my interviews to the masses. I know once people hear my music and my life story they will be able to relate. Social media and networking will always be your top two means of getting your work and artistry out to the people.
