Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Denise Burkey. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Denise, thanks for joining us today. Can you share a customer success story with us?
During Covid, our Park & Preston was fortunate enough to have the line to get into Trader Joe’s in front of our store for 18 mos!! That allowed people who were waiting in line to be able to look into our store and see what we offer. We propped our door open on nice days, and many were excited to know what we did that didn’t know before. One such lady went on to Trader Joe’s and came back to explore our store and what we offered. Some days later she bought her husband into the store and they LOVED it. We asked what they did for a living and found out that what they did and asked if they needed holiday gifts! They did and the rest is history. We were able to provide them a level of service that was missing for them. They are now lifelong customers buying many birthday, housewarming, and other gifts for family and friends from us along with the things for themselves.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
This is a small family business that is run by me and my son. We wanted to escape corporate America. We opened two retail olive oil. balsamic vinegar, small batch whiskey, liqueurs, and spirits stores in Plano, TX within 30 days of each other 5 years ago. We provide not only products but an experience and education that is not only fun but you actually get to taste before you buy.
We solve the age old problem of “I don’t know what to get him/her/them for birthday, holiday, anniversary, housewarming, etc” We have unique products that you can’t find elsewhere and we personalize any gift for any occasion. What sets us apart is that we actually work with you by asking you the right questions and listening to you to find the perfect combination of oil and vinegar, whiskey, or whatever it is you are looking for. We offer you a taste of the product so that you are happy with your purchase.
I am most proud of the relationships that we are able to build with our customers. We LOVE when our customers come back and bring their neighbors, friends, and family to introduce them to us.
We want people to know that there is small family business that offers olive oil, balsamic vinegar, whiskey and spirits in the area and goes the extra mile for you.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
First, building our reputation had to begin with being out in the community and at the local markets we attended along with being knowledgeable about our products and having world class products to offer our customers. Second, our customers had to place their trust in us. Building a rapport with the customer is so important to retaining them. We remember all of our customers – we never forget a face! We like to ask about your family that you spoke about last time or that bottle of whiskey and how you liked it. Customers love when you remember something about their last visit.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Best source of new clients is actually made up of several things: Google for them to find us,
Current customers bringing in their family, friends, and co-workers
Being a part of the local markets, Chamber of Commerce, and attending networking events.
