Deijha , appreciate you joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
It all started with my first visit to Africa, Ghana specifically. Coming here for the first time was magical. It was an experience I’ve never imagined, one that’s unexplainable but it changed my life forever. After visiting for the first time I saw opportunity and the potential. I thought there’s so much that can be done here. Returning back to the states made me feel off. After having such a vibrant full of life experience in Ghana, I went back to the US to just go to work! Ghana was on my mind heavily and I remember having a vision or day dreaming about me being back in Ghana. In this vision I had a restaurant in Ghana! The aroma of the different herbs and spices from that was being made filled the air! Beres Hammond is what I was hearing along with the many voices from the guest of my GRAND OPENING! this vision was so profound that when I snapped out of it I had goosebumps and tears in my eyes! I thought to myself was this a sign from God!? Is this something he want me to do being that I have NO experience in this field at all! From then on I was on a mission to figure out how to get to that vision!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am an African American from Brooklyn, NY who decided to leave everything I knew behind to start a business in Accra, Ghana. I built a food truck literally from the ground up to sell and service Jamaican dishes. Apart from selling food I like to educate my customers on how some off the foods are connected to the traditional Ghanaian food.
I knew absolutely nothing about what I was getting myself into I had to learn and do so much research to figure it all out. I made a plan for the entire year of 2019 on how I was going to execute. Step by step I did everything I thought was necessary to prepare me for the move. With the help and support of my family I officially made my move in October 2019. Started selling January 2020, then Covid hit.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
A month after I officially went on the road with my food truck, the entire world changed right before our eyes! The corona virus struck us like a lightening, quick and abrupt. I was in a foreign country all alone, just started my business, everyone was panicking around me. My family told me to get on the next flight out because they’d rather me be with family than be here alone. I was so confused and sad because I started to feel like maybe I made a mistake. To leave my job and risk it all for it all to be over so soon!
I returned to the states, learned so much about myself, the business, the country and the culture that I was ready to return and take on the challenge again. I was able to get a great location for my food truck and I had customers returning everyday! I received so much great feedback on my food I was so happy.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to learn that sometimes it is ok to take a step back and reroute if necessary. Sometimes we fight so hard to prove to others that we can do this that we lose sight on our “why” of doing it in the first place. It is totally ok to reinvent yourself, rebrand, and create the life that you want to live, however that may look for you. Whenever you’re making a decision make sure it is something that you truly want to do because In the end, no one has to live with the consequences but you
