We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Deborah Ulmer. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Deborah below.
Deborah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
The shift happened with my bakery when I attended a week long plant based immersion. I then became totally vegan and rebranded my bakery the same. Soon I started realizing that I was getting a lot of customers with allergies. I began to have the main focus of my items to be allergen focused so everyone will have a treat to enjoy.
Deborah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve been baking since I can remember and always loved it. I think seeing people happy when they are enjoying a baked good is why I decided in high school that I wanted to open my on bakery. I got my associates degree in baking and pastry arts. A little after college I started as a conventional in home bakery while working a full time also. Eight years ago I turned my bakery fully vegan. I make every day snack treats like brownies, cookies, fudge and bars. I make sure they are super tasty so vegans and non vegans are satisfied.
Have you ever had to pivot?
At the beginning of 2020 I had planned on cutting down my hours at my full time job to put more focus on building my business. Late January we found out that our facility was closing in March and would need to find a new job. I had to make the choice to stay in the workplace or do my business full time. Then the pandemic hit. Along with some tweaking of plans I decided to become self employed and expand my bakery. I was already selling in a couple of small shops but it was up an down because of Covid. I started doing at markets and pop-ops. Now my items are in 5 shops and available to order online for pickup.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
I get new customers by doing markets and events in different places. Then I let them know where they can get my products from anytime.
