We recently connected with Deborah Missy Scott and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Deborah Missy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I started my career in sales management fresh out of college, I worked many hours and I quickly grew rose in rank. In 2021 I was working as a manager and when my store shut down I had to make a decision to either transfer to another store or to leave the company and take the severance pay. I decided to take a leap into the unknown and finally follow my dreams to become an actress. In one I have been able to accomplish so much and I made it my mission to empower other to follow thier dreams. In Auguest of 2022 i won the title of Ms. Petite USA and I started my #iamboundless tour, to show people that it does not matter where you come from or how you look, that your dreams are possible. During my tour I went to 10 different states and empowered over 400 children from diverse. I shared my story with the children and played a game with them that I created. In this game i challenge the children to act, sing and dance in front of their peers in order to biild thier confidence. I also give the children promplmatic senarios and they have to think of a way to overcome that salution. i like to think of the decision to leave my job the big domino. Once I knocked it down, other doors started to open presenting new oppertunities.
Deborah Missy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with my mother and younger sister; my father passed away when I was seven. When I was younger my sister and I played house and out of seven characters I was five lol I literally wanted to be everyone, at that time I didn’t realize I was acting. I just thought I was having fun. Fast forward I’m 13 and I hear advertisement on the radio saying “Do you want to be an actress? Do you want to be a model? Come down to the Sheraton hotel and we might represent you.” So I told my mother we have to go. Once I got there I was told I was great but it will cost $500 for them to represent me. I looked at my mom and I knew that was not gonna happen. So I started to push the idea of being an actress out of my mind.
When I was in college, I was undeclared as a major and I remember speaking on the phone with my grandmother. I told her I wanted to major in theater and she said “ Why don’t you choose something that’s more stable there’s 1 million pretty faces out there.” Then once again… I decided to suppress my dreams for several years.
Once I graduated and started to work in sales management. However, when the store I was working at closed, I decided to finally follow my dreams.
It was important for me to build a community to empower and support others along their journey of following their dreams. So I started my YouTube channel where I share my journey of transitioning into the entertainment industry and pageantry in hopes to inspire others. I started my podcast series “Boundless Visionaries,” where I interview people who are successful in sports and entertainment, industry who overcame boundaries. After I finished my #iamboundless national tour, I wrote a children’s book entitled, I am BOUNDLESS. My hope is to empower children from all around the world to live the life that they dream of.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
As an actress, I am told no more then I am told yes. When I first started applying for roles it took me three months before I landed anything. It was a difficult time but I refused to give up. I believed in my talent and with each day I was developing and becoming better.. My first role was a lead role in a student film at Howard University. Then I landed another lead role, in another student film at North Carolina School of the Arts. After that, I landed a supporting role in a feature film. I wrote two episodes for basically Court Tv, a parody on Court Tv. Most recently I was in a C.R.E.A.M. a featured film that is on Tubi.
And last year later I signed to an exclusive talent agency and I didn’t have to pay them $500 lol.
I truly believe that the key to success is never giving up. If there’s something that you really want to do then you should do it and not allow anything to stop you from doing it. The only thing that can stop you is
you.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I believe we are all blessed with certain talents that we are meant to share with the world. Sometimes when you’re on the path of following your dreams, you start to lose support. I believe it’s important to allow people to take their own journey. We all have our own journey and the best thing that we can do is offer support to one another.
