We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Deanna Day. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Deanna below.
Deanna, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think it takes to be successful?
Being successful starts with how you define success and whether that definition truly resonates with you. When you’re genuinely motivated by your version of success, what remains is approaching it with discipline and excitement – things that are within your control.
For a long time, I measured success by having a stable, well-paying job, and that felt right. But as I grew, I realized my definition of success had evolved beyond external markers like money and prestige. I now define success as doing work that excites and challenges me, within spaces and communities I care about.
This change led me to leave my corporate job and build my own business, giving me more control over both my work and who I serve. Now, I provide design and art services to local small businesses and non-profits, bringing a human touch to their brands, offerings, and events.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Deanna, a multidisciplinary artist and designer who brings warmth and humanity to both digital and physical spaces. My journey started with creating graphics for online communities and evolved through years of UX design in tech, where I learned to solve complex problems while keeping the human experience at the center. Now, I combine my digital expertise with traditional art forms like handlettering, illustration, and murals.
I work with businesses and brands who want their presence and space to feel more authentic. Whether it’s designing a welcoming website, creating an eye-catching mural, or developing brand visuals that tell their story, I help organizations express their values and connect meaningfully with their community. My background in UX means I bring both artistic creativity and strategic thinking to every project – ensuring the work is not just beautiful, but purposeful.
What sets me apart is my blend of professional design experience and artistic creativity. My background in tech taught me the importance of clear communication, organized processes, and strategic thinking – skills I bring to every project while maintaining a focus on human connection. Whether you’re looking to refresh your brand, engage your audience more effectively, or bring more creativity and warmth to your space, I’d love to collaborate and bring your vision to life.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategies for growing my clientele are pretty simple: showing up consistently and nurturing real connections. Whether it’s through social media or in-person events, genuine relationships have been the foundation of my business growth.
I saw this play out in 2024 when I was actually focused on restructuring my business rather than marketing. Despite not actively promoting my services, I landed more client work than ever before through word of mouth alone and had my first five-figure year while only working part-time on my business. This experience showed me that authentic connections and quality work naturally lead to referrals and opportunities.
How did you build your audience on social media?
My approach to social media has always been about showing up authentically and making genuine connections with people – while being mindful of my own energy and boundaries. It’s about finding a sustainable rhythm that feels natural, not forced.
For those just starting out, my advice is: don’t let perfectionism hold you back. It’s better to put your work out there and see how people respond than to endlessly polish something that might not resonate (which can be hard when you’re sharing something vulnerable like art). Remember that social media metrics don’t define your worth or success – they’re just one way to share your story with the world. If posting feels like a chore rather than something enjoyable, it’s worth reconsidering your approach. And while algorithm changes can feel overwhelming, what consistently works is staying true to your voice and creating content that genuinely connects with people.
