We were lucky to catch up with Dayvaughn Mays recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Dayvaughn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I learned how to study religion by forcing myself to read, I would have read more in the past to speed up the process. One essential skill is being objective and listening to those that oppose and disagree with you. One obstacle to overcome is distraction, staying focused in a sea of information can be difficult.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Dayvaughn Mays, I am a poet and author of many books based on Biblical literature. I began writing poetry in middle school and continued through high school. I co authored my first poetry book in 2009. I felt the need to express my life and help others learn to do the same. I began with community services and then began to write self help study guides and poetry focused on ethics and morality. I think I’m different from others because I don’t like telling others what to do but showing them what I do and let them decide. I try to show all sides of any argument to be fair and give as much information in a topic to help people make informed decisions.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is getting people to read and study more about how to help others which makes your environment a better place. Stop gang violence, maintain relationships, stop having children out of wedlock, learn financial literacy. These topic alone plague many communities.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of what I do is receiving messages via text or emails about how I was able to help someone learn, overcome or teach others about a subject that was valuable to them.
