We were lucky to catch up with Da’Vion Tatum recently and have shared our conversation below.
Da’Vion, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Growing up and seeing how so many people who look like me are mistreated across so many different areas has made me want to be instrumental in fixing those disparities. If we look at our health system, our justice system, and even our society as a whole, it becomes overwhelmingly clear that disparities not only exist but are prevalent in new and more overlooked ways. I aim to use my platform and my work to rectify these issues and uplift minority and underserved communities on multiple frontiers.
Da’Vion, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am the founder of The A1 Foundation which is a nonprofit based in Houston, TX. We are dedicated to serving our community, and our initiatives are action based, inclusive, and driven by compassion! I am also the author of the book Thriving In My Own Lane which aims to not only address the issues of social stigma but also describe ways to fight against an oppressive and divisive system. I am proud of my work in my community that allowed for me to make history as the First Black male Valedictorian at my high school and continue my education at Harvard University. I have also received an award named in my honor, the Tatum Award for Rising Writers, presented annually by the district of SpringISD to high school students who exemplify the principles of leadership and expression through writing. I am also the host of my new podcast The Main Takeaway which will be on all streaming platforms this coming Fall!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to be the change I desire so desperately to see in our world. Everything I do, I do with pure intentions of helping others and I hope that I am able to be a blessing to others through my work!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It’s rewarding to see how sharing your journey can have a huge impact on the lives of those around you. I was hesitant to write and publish my book, but to see other students and people of all ages saying how my book and my journey have touched and inspired them, is an honor and a blessing that I cannot even begin to put into words.
