We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dario Ariza Barrios a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Dario thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
The idea for Sound of Self did not begin as a business concept. It began as a personal journey.
I am originally from Colombia, and throughout my life music has been much more than entertainment. Music became the way I processed experiences, challenges, uncertainty, and personal growth. Long before I started developing educational programs, I was using music to understand myself.
As a songwriter and composer, I discovered that emotions that felt overwhelming in my mind could be transformed through the creative process. Feelings such as fear, frustration, self-doubt, loneliness, or uncertainty could be expressed through lyrics, melodies, rhythms, and sound. What started as something negative often became something meaningful. By turning those emotions into music, I was able to transform them into motivation, resilience, and strength.
Over time, I realized that many of the songs I created were not just artistic products. They were evidence of a process of self-expression and self-discovery. Music gave me a way to tell my story, make sense of difficult experiences, and reconnect with my own sense of purpose.
When I later became a music educator, I began noticing similar patterns in my students.
Many students struggled to express what they were feeling. Some lacked confidence. Others had difficulty communicating their ideas or connecting with their peers. Yet whenever I gave them opportunities to create music based on their own experiences, something remarkable happened. Students who were normally quiet became engaged. Students who struggled in traditional academic settings found a voice. Students began sharing stories, emotions, and perspectives through music in ways they often could not through ordinary conversation.
That was the moment when my personal experience and my professional experience came together.
I began asking myself: if music had helped me better understand myself and transform challenges into growth, could it do the same for students?
The answer, based on what I was seeing in my classroom, appeared to be yes.
That realization became the foundation of Sound of Self. The program was designed around the belief that music creation is not only an artistic skill but also a powerful tool for self-expression, communication, creativity, and social-emotional development.
What convinced me that this was a worthwhile endeavor was the fact that I had experienced its benefits personally and was beginning to see similar outcomes in educational settings. I was not developing a solution based solely on theory. I was building upon lived experience, classroom observation, and educational research.
I also felt uniquely positioned to pursue this work because my background combines multiple perspectives. I am a professional musician, a composer, an educator, and a researcher. Those experiences allowed me to understand both the artistic process and the practical realities of the classroom.
What began as a personal realization eventually evolved into a broader vision: creating opportunities for young people to discover their voices, tell their stories, and develop confidence through music.
At its core, Sound of Self is based on a simple idea. Every person carries experiences, emotions, and stories within them. Music can help transform those experiences into something meaningful, empowering, and deeply human.

Dario, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Dario Ariza, and I am a Colombian music educator, composer, producer, researcher, and creative entrepreneur currently based in the United States. Throughout my career, I have been passionate about one central idea: helping people find and express their unique voice through music.
My journey began as a musician and composer, but over time I became increasingly interested in the transformative power of music beyond performance alone. Through my own experiences as an artist, I discovered that music could be a powerful tool for self-expression, emotional processing, personal growth, and human connection. This realization eventually led me to pursue advanced studies in music research and education while continuing to develop my work as a performer, producer, and teacher.
Today, my work exists at the intersection of music creation, education, and personal development.
I am the creator of Sound of Self, an innovative music-based program that uses songwriting, music creation, and creative expression to support communication skills, creativity, confidence, language development, and social-emotional growth. The program was inspired by both my personal experiences as a musician and my observations as an educator working with diverse student populations. Through Sound of Self, participants are encouraged to explore their stories, emotions, identities, and experiences through the creative process.
In addition to Sound of Self, I provide a variety of professional music services.
As a music producer, I help artists, organizations, and creators bring their musical ideas to life through arrangement, recording, production, and creative development. My goal is to help each project communicate an authentic message while maintaining high artistic and technical quality.
As a session musician, I collaborate with artists and creative teams by providing instrumental and vocal support for recordings, performances, and creative projects. My experience as both a performer and composer allows me to adapt to different musical styles while contributing creatively to the overall vision of a project.
I also work as a music educator, offering instruction in general music, functional guitar, singing, choir, songwriting, music creativity, and music technology. My teaching philosophy emphasizes creativity, practical musicianship, confidence building, and meaningful musical experiences rather than rote memorization alone.
What sets me apart is the combination of perspectives I bring to every project. I am not only a musician. I am also an educator, researcher, composer, producer, and curriculum designer. This multidisciplinary background allows me to approach music from artistic, educational, and human-centered perspectives simultaneously.
The accomplishment I am most proud of is creating opportunities for people to discover their own voices through music. Whether I am teaching a child in a classroom, producing a song for an artist, directing a choir, mentoring a student, or facilitating a Sound of Self workshop, my goal remains the same: to help people transform ideas, emotions, and experiences into meaningful creative expression.
Above all, I want people to know that my brand is built around authenticity, creativity, growth, and connection. I believe every person has a story worth telling, and music remains one of the most powerful ways to tell that story.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the ability to transform ideas, emotions, and life experiences into something meaningful that can connect with others. I find it incredibly fulfilling when a song, a musical project, or a creative experience helps someone feel understood, inspired, or empowered. Creativity allows me to turn challenges into growth and create opportunities for others to do the same.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes. My mission is to help people discover and express their authentic voice through music and creativity. Whether I am teaching, producing music, composing, or developing Sound of Self, my goal is to create experiences that foster self-expression, confidence, connection, and personal growth. I believe music has the power not only to entertain but also to transform lives, and that belief continues to drive my creative journey.
