We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Daquesha Chever a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Daquesha, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
I wouldn’t be who I am today, without acknowledging how I actually got here. I took a non-traditional route into medical school. In high school, college never really entered my mind despite having sisters who previously attended. I thought I had all the schooling I could take; boy was I surprised! I had made a deal with my parents, to give me 1 year to decide my career path. Well, that year flew by! One day I heard my calling to be a Medical Assistant while watching a television commercial. Who would have thought a commercial would set in motion the next steps to my destiny? People often talk about being called into a profession. I guess you could say I was actually called to become a great physician. Unlike many of my peers, who say they knew from a young age they would become a doctor; my calling was different.
My calling was set the moment I became a medical assistant. It was a spontaneous feeling of excitement, enjoyment, and fulfillment. I was drawn into the medical world. I was a sponge absorbing all the medical information that I could. I was employed at the right place, at the right time. While working there, a physician took me under her wing and began to mentor me. She encouraged me for the first time to pursue my dream, that I was to scared to say out loud. At the age of 21, I quickly found myself enrolled at Ohio University as a Premed student. It was a roller coaster ride, but I was strapped in and determined to never give up. My determination was directly due to staying positive and believing in my new self-worth. I had to release my fears, anxieties, and some rejections along the way. I learned how to increase my faith and trust God daily.
Now that I have made it to where I am, I realize that everything definitely happens for a reason. So, never give up or lose hope, because what you set your mind to can happen!

Daquesha, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Well, I am a board-certified family medicine physician, author, speaker, and consultant. I earned my doctorate degree from Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, and further completed my training in Michigan and Florida. I finally settled down in Atlanta, to find my spouse and raise a family. I have authored two self-transformative books, of which Step Into Your Destiny was an Amazon #1 best seller. My second book Releasing Manifesting All Of Me, immediately took off, and I have been on a nationwide and international book signing tour, helping others get their Releasing Spree On! I want everyone to experience a releasing spree. This invitation challenges all of us to enter into this community of releasing out the best in you, and the worst out of you, to get you to your next best in every arena of your life!

If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Most definitely, I would choose the same profession. I was drawn into the medical world as a Medical Assistant, and this was the first time in my life, that I truly enjoyed learning! I just couldn’t get enough, so much that I truly felt the “calling into medicine” to become a Physician. This feeling, manifested not only a higher calling, but gave my life and future a purpose beyond my wildest imagination. To this day, I can’t think of another area of work, that could bring me the same satisfaction. On a daily basis, I am able to help others release their best health and live a much happier, healthier, and fuller life. Being a physician is the gift that keeps on giving!

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Getting here wasn’t easy. There were many sleepless nights and moments of self-doubt, but I continued to persevere. In particular, during my intern year, I was on call at the hospital for 24 hour shifts at a time, and some of those shifts, I had to carry up to 4 pagers! This demand put my physical, mental, and spiritual beliefs to the ultimate test. I had to learn to think, behave, speak, eat and sleep differently, in order to accomplish my goals and patients’ needs. I knew this was only a temporary test. So I didn’t lose my hope, I just concentrated on completing one day at a time. I kept my faith strong, by visualizing myself as an outstanding physician.
