We recently connected with Daniela Lugo and have shared our conversation below.
Daniela , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
As an actress and filmmaker, I strive to tell compelling and relatable stories, particularly those about the Latin community. Among all my projects, the most significant to me is a short film I am producing in Mexico called “La Marcha de los Pingüinos” (March of the Penguins). It tells the story of a Mexican woman attempting to cross the US-Mexico border to help her family and highlights the sacrifices and struggles of immigrants in pursuit of the American Dream. The story is based on a real experience shared with me by an anonymous woman, whom I promised to honor and represent through this project. We will distribute the film in the US, Mexico, and Spain, and I am proud to be both the producer and lead actress in this impactful project. Stay tuned for its release in June!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
As a bilingual Latina actress and filmmaker from Mexico City, my passion for the entertainment industry began at a young age. After studying acting, filmmaking, singing, and dancing, I discovered my true calling as a filmmaker while working on Alfonso Cuarón’s Oscar-winning movie “Roma” in 2016. Since then, I have pursued my career in New York City and Los Angeles, producing short films and acting in various projects, including an upcoming off-Broadway play “Octopus In Its Own Ink” and my three latest short films “WIFI DATE”, “POSADA”, and “March of the Penguins”. As an artist, I believe the most rewarding aspect of my work is creating experiences that evoke emotion and transport audiences to a different reality, bringing joy and a sense of escape during difficult times. Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My ultimate goal as a Latina filmmaker is to create a production company that champions and amplifies the voices of the Latin/Hispanic community in LA and Mexico City. There is a wealth of untapped talent that deserves to be discovered and celebrated, and I am confident that I can be a catalyst for change in the Hollywood Latino industry.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
As an artist, nothing brings me more joy and satisfaction than the ability to evoke emotions and create new experiences for my audience. Whether it’s through my acting on stage or my projects on the big screen, I strive to make people feel something they’ve never experienced before and put a smile on their faces. Especially during challenging times, the arts have the power to uplift and inspire, and I am honored to be a part of that process.
For example, last month I had the honor to coordinate the show for the Mexican comedian “La India Yuridia” at the YouTube Theatre. The dancers and I had a strong and fun connection with the audience. We even cried when we saw the audience having so much fun.
Seeing a happy and moved audience is a feeling beyond words, and I am grateful for the opportunity to make a positive impact through my art.
