We recently connected with Daniel Perry and have shared our conversation below.
Daniel, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Alright – so having the idea is one thing, but going from idea to execution is where countless people drop the ball. Can you talk to us about your journey from idea to execution?
After graduating from art school, I immediately found a loft studio and an art mentor. His guidance led me to “The Well of Endless Ideas.” After dedicating myself fully to my chosen field, I learned to breathe, eat, drink, and sleep my art-filled life. Inspiration is everywhere. Also, as a curator, I choose what aspect I identify with another artist’s creation and something different from another, etc. These ideas and reflections occur in my dreams, where they congeal and eventually become a storyboard. Assignments then come to me and I use these storyboards that sometimes have been sitting for years until their time has come. I then preside over the casting of my creative team, choosing the finest in my quest for quality. Pre-production is honed as much as possible to ensure the shoot day goes seamlessly. Location, props, garments, and music set the unique mood. Post-production is sometimes lengthy to get everything just right. Many eyes are needed to review the best of the best. For a commercial project, I factor in universal appeal. Occasionally the work created transcends its initial usage and can be presented as fine art. Ultimately this is the ideal situation for it makes for a signature style. The picture around the picture means there is so much more to the inception and creation of a one-of-a-kind image.

Daniel, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am both a commercial and fine art photographer. I have participated in over 40 art gallery shows and 3 coffee table books. The work has appeared in dozens of international magazines. In portraits, I take my subjects to the next level and in many ways make their photographic fantasies come true. Additionally, I capture the best versions of my subjects. What I want is repeat clients, this way I can build a relationship, get to know them better, and create customized, quality, and unique content. I never want to shoot the same thing over again. My clients and I keep moving forward.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The road to being your best is always under construction. After dedicating the best of my energies to my art, all the little decisions I make in a day become so much easier. I set my goal post as high as possible and have found role models and became interested in how they got there. I take pride in fulfilling my role as a mentor myself. I identify and relate to the most successful players in my field. I analyze and identify their direction, and align myself accordingly. I copy their success and learn from every mistake along the way. There are never any regrets when you know you are being the best version of yourself. Fulfillment and satisfaction come from these steps no matter the profession.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
From time to time and in all the different cities where I have lived and worked, I sometimes had to work outside my field. In a down mood it sometimes felt like a waste of time; while in an up-tempo, I was still expanding and learning something new that would add to my history and lend perspective and appreciation once I got back to my original goals. These goals are never forgotten.
An example was during the pandemic I took on film and television background actor work part-time. I became fascinated with the huge productions and budgets these directors had. I did get the work with some of the most successful actors and directors alive today. Just being in proximity to them was a good influence. And in many ways, it was so similar to my photo productions. I ended up being grateful for these experiences.
