We were lucky to catch up with D’Angelo Lowe recently and have shared our conversation below.
D’Angelo, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear you experience with and lessons learned from recruiting and team building.
When I first started, there were no employees it was just me. It was a daily grind. I worked long hours and went hard every single day. I would even shadow other attorneys in court, almost as if I wasn’t a practicing attorney myself, because I wanted to truly learn the ropes and make sure I understood the law at a deep level. Law school teaches you theory, but being out here on your own is entirely different. Even with legal clinics, nothing fully prepares you for standing on your own without anyone behind you.
The decision to hire came when I realized I could accomplish more with a team than I ever could alone. A good friend of mine also an attorney around my age who has since passed away spoke to me about the importance of not trying to do everything yourself. He emphasized that bringing someone on would allow me to focus on high-level legal work rather than administrative tasks like answering phones and returning calls. That shift, he explained, would ultimately allow the right hire to pay for themselves by freeing me up to generate more impact and more business.
At the time, my hiring process was simple. I posted on Indeed, Monster, and other job sites. I started with a part-time employee and conducted fairly traditional interviews. Looking back, I wasn’t hiring based on core values or long-term growth potential I was asking textbook questions to gauge customer service skills and see if candidates could say the “right” things. I didn’t yet understand how to interview for character, culture, and alignment.
Training was equally informal. I brought people in and showed them what I was doing. There were no templates, no checklists, no onboarding systems. It was very much a “learn by doing” environment the same way I felt I had been introduced to the practice of law.
If I were starting over, I would absolutely define core values from day one and hire based on character traits and long-term fit rather than just experience. I also would have invested earlier in higher pay and benefits. I believe taking care of your team helps you attract and retain strong people, and that ultimately strengthens the entire firm.
That said, given where I was at the time a solo attorney hiring one person I don’t believe we needed anything overly elaborate. The growth was organic, and each step built the foundation for where we are now.

D’Angelo, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I was born into the improvised Chicago suburb of Harvey, Illinois, and I am no stranger to hardship. I grew up in an environment riddled with drug dealing, gang violence, and systemic disadvantages, experiencing firsthand and the struggles faced by those navigating a world stacked against them. As a young man, I found myself in trouble with the law, but I made a conscious decision to change the trajectory of my life. I chose a path that would allow me to help others facing similar circumstances. That decision led me to law school, where I refused to let my past define my future.
Determined to rise above adversity, I earned my Doctorate of Jurisprudence from South Texas College of Law in Houston, Texas. While there, I distinguished myself as an exceptional student, earning myself as an accolade, including the Top 10 Advocate Award in mock trial litigation, the Lyndon B. Johnson Civil Rights Award, and the John F. Ensle Award in Evidence. I also received the CALI Award for Excellence in Evidence and the Vision & Elkins Public Interest Award, and I was inducted into Phi Delta Phi International Legal Honor Society. Graduating in the top 25% of my class, I proved the resilience and dedication cab overcome any obstacle.
Immediately after law school, I wasted no time launching my own law firm, focusing on criminal defense and family law. For six years, I fought passionately for my clients, securing life-changing victories. One of my most significant achievements in family law was successfully arguing an adoption case that required both the involuntary and voluntary termination of parental rights. A case that was upheld on appeal and established new case law in Texas regarding involuntary terminations.
Although I transitioned away from family law in 2022, I have continued to make a lasting impact in criminal defense attorney, I have maintained an 85% dismissal and not-guilty rate in Harris County, Texas, along with nearly 60% success rate statewide. I have secured dismissals for clients facing serious charges, including murder, aggravated robbery, and aggravated assault. Proving time and again that an aggressive, strategic defense can make all the difference. My rise to becoming a top lawyer was unexpected, but it was driven by determination, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to my clients.
I am not just another attorney, I am a fighter, an advocate, and a firm believer in second chances. I found Lowe Law, PLLC on the principle that every person deserves a fair shot at justice, no matter their background. My firm stands as a beacon of hope for individual facing life-altering legal battles, whether they are wrongly accused of a crime or fighting for the compensation they rightfully deserve after an injury.

I have taken on powerful defendants, including celebrities such as Chet Hanks, the son of Hollywood icon Tom Hanks, holding them accountable in civil court. More importantly, I have recovered millions of dollars for accident victims, frequently securing policy-limit settlements and in multiple cases, double or even triple the policy limits through aggressive negotiation and strategic litigation. My unwavering commitment to maximizing client compensation has solidified my reputation as a formidable advocate in personaI injury law.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing our clientele has been word-of-mouth referrals driven by consistently delivering high-quality service, exceptional client experiences, and strong results. Satisfied clients naturally shared their experiences, allowing us to retarget and build upon those relationships. More recently, we have shifted our focus toward branding, developing a consistent, reliable, and recognizable brand, which has significantly contributed to our continued growth.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A significant lesson I had to unlearn was operating from a scarcity mindset. The constant fear of missing out, losing something, or never having enough. For a long time, I believed that opportunities were limited and that if I didn’t hold tightly to what I had, it would disappear.
That mindset was rooted in my upbringing. I grew up in an impoverished household, raised by a single mother who had me at fifteen, with four children to support. I didn’t know my father, and resources were always limited. Growing up, abundance wasn’t something I experienced. There wasn’t an expectation of achievement, financial stability, or consistent access to opportunities.
As a result, I carried that scarcity-based thinking into adulthood. Unlearning it required a conscious shift toward an abundance mindset; believing that opportunities can be created, that there is always more to be built, earned, and achieved, and that I will be okay regardless.
The shift has been transformative. Moving from scarcity to abundance is what truly allowed me to thrive, grow with confidence, and approach both life and business from a place of possibility rather than fear.
