We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dakeas Wright a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dakeas , appreciate you joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
The thought process of building my brand around my life experiences. As a young basketball player pursing to grow and someday be a professional at my craft, it took a lot of work but understanding how to overcome adversity. Years of work and obstacles but each year ended with some type of growth rather it was a huge leap or with it being a small growth. It was always a great thing to see any type of growth. The year I was able to break through and actually say I made it, was a blessing but it was the mindset the overcoming, keeping God first. My brand has now been globally recognized, players from across the nation have been able to adapt to my brand
“Nothing Was Handed”. With this phrase and Morton I have been able to connect this with my basketball skills operation now going on 13 years. With players playing on every level from intermediate, collegiate and the professional level. My goal has always been more than just basketball but the mindset of locking in on your goals and staying consistent with it.

Dakeas , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
The way I got into the basketball market was playing locally in the Atl, Ga area. Once I was able to build my name and get some recognition the rest was history. I hopped on social media and marketed myself to becoming the first influencer to get a call up to a NBA G League team tryout in training camp. The numbers on my social media account grew each year, the viewership hundred of thousand and some million view videos. With this type of growth I’ve been able to work with all type of brands, companies and get booked for events. Making a living off a passion and creating a life with just believing in myself. My brand Nothing Was Handed will be the base foundation for players, kids, adults etc to take the mindset and brand into anything, any walk in life you want to take it. Having my own basketball product is just another testament to what you can achieve.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I truly had to unlearn and never would have thought, was the guilty feeling of bringing close ones with me. Unfortunately over the years my success has separated long relationships with close friends but even today I want the best for them. If I can share any advice on this, is making sure the team you build around you is for you as well and you guys want everyone to win. No competition within the group.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building the audience solely came from what I’ve put my work ethic into. Basketball ball handling and showing off cool handles and cool videos the captures my skill set. One mention to different tags has grown my page and audience over the years. My advice to anyone looking to start this, be consistent be creative and be ORIGINAL!
