We recently connected with Daisy Cabrera and have shared our conversation below.
Daisy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
Fifteen years ago, after building my career in agencies and corporate leadership roles, I launched my own PR and communications consultancy: Cabrera Consulting. My first client, who was a former colleague, brought me in to lead a national multicultural PR initiative focused on Hispanic audiences.
Immediately, I built a full-scale strategic plan (e.g. clear goals, audience insights, culturally fluent messaging, integrated tactics, media and creator targets, timeline, budget and KPIs) and positioned multicultural communications as a revenue-driving growth strategy, not an add-on.
That first signed contract (and first paid invoice!) was more than income. It was validation. Proof that my expertise had market value on my own terms and the foundation for long-term partnerships rooted in trust, strategy and measurable results.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a bilingual strategic communications leader with more than 25 years of experience building brands, protecting reputations and driving culturally relevant storytelling across industries – from beauty, travel and lifestyle to healthcare, food and the arts. Today, I lead my own consultancy, partnering with corporations, nonprofits and agencies that need this senior-level thinking.
Early in my career, I became fascinated by the intersection of culture, media and influence – how a well-told story could shape perception, create preference, build brand trust and move people to action.
Throughout my career, I’ve led earned-first, integrated communications campaigns. My consultancy focuses on strategic communications planning, media relations, multicultural strategy, executive visibility, thought leadership and integrated campaign development. I often come in at pivotal moments – product/service launches, crisis situations and expansion into multicultural markets.
The problems I solve are both strategic and structural. Many organizations struggle with clarity – their messaging is either too complex, too generic or not culturally resonant. Others have strong marketing and/or social media presence but weak earned media strategy. Some underestimate the purchasing power of multicultural audiences – who over-index across multiple categories. I help clients sharpen their narrative, align stakeholders, identify opportunity gaps and translate business objectives into communications programs that deliver measurable impact.
What sets me apart is perspective. I operate at the intersection of corporate rigor and cultural fluency. I understand boardrooms and community rooms. I think in terms of business outcomes, not just impressions. And, I understand internal dynamics – budget pressures, executive expectations, legal considerations and cross-functional alignment. I pride myself on anticipating risk, identifying opportunity and building strategies that are thoughtful, not trendy.
What I am most proud of is sustaining an independent consultancy built largely on reputation, reliability and referrals. That longevity speaks to trust. I’m proud of campaigns that have shifted narratives around health equity, cultivated Hispanic consumer engagement, positively impacted communities, strengthened corporate reputations and delivered real ROI.
More than anything, I want potential clients to know this: I am not a vendor. I am a strategic partner, and an extension of the brand. I ask hard questions. I push for clarity. I care about outcomes. And, I believe that culturally intelligent communications is not a niche – it is a business imperative.
At its core, my consultancy is about influence with integrity – building visibility that is authentic, strategic and built to last.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe my reputation was built on three things: results, relationships and consistency.
First, I deliver. Across multiple industries and roles – agency side, in-house and now as an independent consultant – I’ve always tied communications back to business outcomes. Whether it was elevating a national brand campaign, driving multicultural engagement, strengthening executive visibility or protecting a reputation during a sensitive moment, I focused on measurable impact, not just activity. Over time, people remember who helped them solve real problems.
Second, I invest in relationships. Communications is a trust business. I’ve built long-standing relationships with clients, journalists, content creators, community leaders and colleagues by being transparent, prepared and dependable. Many of my opportunities – including the growth of my consultancy – have come from referrals and former colleagues who trusted how I think, how I work, and how I deliver.
And third, consistency. I’ve shown up the same way for more than two decades – strategic, culturally fluent and solutions-oriented. In an industry that can sometimes chase trends, I’ve focused on fundamentals: clarity of message, alignment with business goals and respect for the multicultural audience.
I also think being bilingual and culturally competent – not just linguistically, but strategically – positioned me as someone who could bridge gaps between brands and multicultural communities in a meaningful way. I never approached multicultural communications as a box to check. I approached it as a growth strategy grounded in insight and authenticity.
Ultimately, reputation isn’t built in one campaign. It’s built project by project, conversation by conversation. I’ve treated every single engagement – large or small – as if it were a long-term partnership.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been delivering work that makes people want to refer me.
My growth has been relationship-driven and reputation-led. When you consistently deliver strategic thinking, measurable results and steady leadership – clients remember. And they return.
Much of my contract work (fractional, and freelance PR and communications) has come from former colleagues, past clients or agency partners who moved into new roles and brought me in because they trusted how I think and execute. That kind of growth is slower, but it’s stronger. It’s built on credibility, not promotion.
The second strategy has been positioning – clearly articulating where I add value. I focus on being known for specific strengths: earned-first integrated campaigns, multicultural strategy as a growth driver, executive visibility and narrative clarity. When organizations face a transition, launch or reputational inflection point, they know exactly why to call me.
I’ve also been intentional about thought leadership – contributing a monthly editorial to a leading industry magazine, and maintaining visibility within professional networks by sharing PR and communications tips. That visibility reinforces expertise without feeling transactional.
Ultimately, I’ve grown my consultancy the way strong brands are built: stay relevant, resonate deeply, and deliver consistent results.
