We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dairon & Kendrick Houston. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dairon & Kendrick below.
Dairon & Kendrick, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
It all started during a challenging spot in both of our lives. We were both, at the time, under the same roof and doing our sneaker ventures, but we had other plans as well. We both wanted something that we could claim as ours. We were in the car riding down the highway, and we thought to create clothing. We didn’t want to just do merch, we legitimately wanted a clothing brand that was inspired by us. We continued to play on the idea and began thinking of a logo immediately. The logo is what completely sparked the idea behind the message of the brand. The logo is a cartoon like rendition of a brain. Next, over the course of the next few days, things began happening that really affected our lives tremendously. At that point, we began to chat about life, and this caused us to attach the idea behind the logo. We decided to focus on pushing a message of positive thinking and mental strength. After that, it took us a few days to think of a name. We wanted to be catchy with a play on words and very authentic. Initially we decided to go with just Pink Matter, and Pink Matter is what we began to use on our logo and the marketing we began to push. Oddly enough, one of us just randomly decided to attach Brand at the end and since that point, it has been Pink Matter Brand, with a mission to create clothing that gives people the opportunity to showcase their mental strength and positivity.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We are Dairon and Kendrick Houston, two brothers that are truly attached in every way possible. We are sneaker enthusiasts who have used that platform to help us create our latest venture in clothing with Pink Matter Brand. Our inability in being able to find clothing that we liked is what initially peaked our interest in creating our own brand. Rather than spending time looking for what we wanted, we decided to make it. We also set out to make our clothes available to ALL sizes. The size range between the both of us is a decent gap, so it was important for us to cater to EVERYONE.
Mental health, especially amongst men, is not something that is often talked about within the African American community, and that is something that we would like to see change. While we don’t consider ourselves a mental health brand, every design stems from the idea of positivity and mental strength.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
We are in the process of that pivot at the time of this interview. When we initially started this brand, things started off better than we expected. We started with a basic t-shirt, a beanie, and a sweater. Our focus was on quality with premium materials and embroidery. We would also do a preorder where we would open up sales through particular dates and then after that date we would get the items created and shipped to our buyers. We began to notice that although sales were above our expectations, we were not doing things in the most efficient way possible. We wanted to transition to vendors that provided better quality of materials, and we also wanted to find a more efficient way in getting these products to our buyers. So, at this moment, at the time of this interview, we are currently making adjustments to make sure we can be the best brand that we can possibly create. We’ve been making changes and haven’t sold anything in over a year, but we intend on releasing our products again this year, 2022 in a better form than we did previously. We want to make sure we present our brand in a way that keeps everyone coming back.

Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
We have many avenues of keeping in touch with everyone. We have our social media platforms: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and TikTok, and we also interact in a more conventional way via email. We will interact with buyers, those that have questions, or even those who just want to have a conversation. We’re no stranger to anyone who wants to interact with us. Brand loyalty is something that has really been something we’ve wanted to push once we come back into things. We haven’t decided just yet what we will do exactly, but we want to make sure we show all of our buyers that we are greatly appreciated for their support and that they are also a part of this brand.
