We were lucky to catch up with Craig Carter recently and have shared our conversation below.
Craig , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
As a kid and teen I would always sketch and doodle images here and there but the spark of my professional path happened was when I was commissioned to paint a mural at the The Hunter Club Bar and Venue in Bury St Edmunds,UK in 2010. After I completed the mural the owner loved the finished painting and had the editor of the local newspaper (Bury Free Press) to do a story about me, that was my first international feature. That’s when I knew I wanted to take my craft more serious.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Well, I’m a self taught contemporary mixed media visual artist from Houston,Texas that got into the art industry by submitting my artwork into several art exhibitions nationally and internationally. Sometimes my work was turned down but that didn’t stop my drive and passion for creating art. I knew that I was given this gift for a certain purpose so I continued to stick with it. As far as creative techniques I just let my hands do the talking on canvas while I listen to music. A lot of my influence comes from African culture and urban elements. Most of my paintings are usually on a variety of different sizes of canvases and walls . I think my use vibrant colors and stylization sets my artwork apart from other artists. Luckily I rarely have issues with clients. I have an abundance of accomplishments that I’m proud of but if I had to choose one thing it would have to be that I’m happy my mother can see my artwork in several magazine features.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I think what helped me with building my audience is staying consistent with posting my artwork everyday. Even when I don’t feel like posting I still make time to do so because I know that there is someone out there that needs the motivation to create. The only advice I have is to always create content and engage with your target audience.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is inspiring the youth to always stay creative. Growing up as a kid I never seen an actual artist especially that looked like me or came from the type of environment that I grew up in. I want to give the youth hope and positive outlook on life through the use of creating art. It can take them further than they imagined.
