We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Courtney Jay Slater. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Courtney below.
Courtney, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
I am so thankful that from a young age, my parents instilled in me the importance of education, shaping my drive to earn my college degree. Despite distractions and challenges, I persevered and graduated with a Bachelor’s in Communication and a minor in Health Science from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. After my dad made it clear he would no longer support my education if I didn’t take it seriously, I took that message to heart. With determination and a commitment to my future, I worked my way through the last years of school not only as a student but also as a wife and mom. While I didn’t initially know how to apply my degree, I now see how those early lessons have come full circle in my life as a wife, mom and realtor.
Growing up as the youngest of four sisters, I often felt like an only child, which fostered my creativity and imagination. My parents encouraged this solitude, teaching me that being alone could be a source of strength. This mindset developed my creativity, communication skills and resilience—qualities that are essential in my career today.
A defining moment in my childhood came when I was a Girl Scout. My mom insisted that I go door-to-door to sell cookies on my own, rather than relying on her. This experience taught me accountability and the importance of stepping outside my comfort zone—skills I now apply in everyday life!
My parents also taught me to stand up for myself, particularly when faced with unkindness. They encouraged me to express my feelings and advocate for myself, reinforcing the idea that my voice matters. When I felt frustrated by the lack of diverse representation in Disney princesses, my mom motivated me to write to the company, solidifying my belief in the power of open communication. This was even more of a big deal considering that this took place long before the internet or google!
My parents allowed me to spend my summers with close family who lived a more affluent lifestyle than us. This exposed me to a broader world, inspiring me to dream bigger and pursue opportunities that aligned with my aspirations. This perspective helped shape my understanding of success and motivated me to set ambitious goals.
My background in Health Science naturally led me to a career in fitness and wellness. I became a Certified Personal Trainer and Certified Group Trainer, using my knowledge in health, fitness, nutrition, and wellness to inspire others. Today, I share the “best of” healthy living with my followers and clients in North Dallas, emphasizing the importance of a balanced lifestyle.
My father’s entrepreneurial spirit and creativity further influenced my approach to business. He consistently pursued his passions throughout my childhood, demonstrating the importance of dreaming big and taking initiative. His background in radio, including his memorable work on shows like Soul Train, inspired me to embrace my unique voice. People often compliment my soothing demeanor, a trait I attribute to him, along with the patience necessary for navigating mom life and real estate challenges.
Through these formative experiences, I’ve learned to blend effective communication, creativity, and a steadfast belief in dreaming big. My upbringing, combined with my passion for health and wellness, has shaped my entrepreneurial spirit, allowing me to build a successful career in real estate while balancing wife/mom life and promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a wife and a proud mom of four: an adult daughter who played collegiate soccer at TCU and has recently completed her Master’s degree in Business, an 11-year-old son who is incredibly smart and lovable, and 8-year-old twin boys who keep our lives full of energy and joy.
Before entering the real estate industry, I worked as a personal trainer and group exercise instructor, eventually moving into corporate wellness. After taking time off to care for my twin boys, I was looking to re-enter the workforce when my husband suggested I explore real estate. He believed I would excel in this field, and after some consideration, I decided to make the leap. I purchased my study materials and shifted my focus to becoming a REALTOR.
Now, I serve the North Dallas metroplex and surrounding suburbs as both a listing and buyer’s agent. I’m dedicated to helping my clients find homes that truly fit their needs and desires. What sets me apart is my creativity and marketing expertise. I approach each listing with a strategic mindset, considering the target audience and crafting marketing plans that resonate with them.
I’m especially proud of the results my clients achieve when they follow my guidance. Many have seen their properties sell at or above asking price in record time. I leverage my market knowledge to provide potential buyers with an authentic sense of what it’s like to live in the communities they’re considering. I believe in getting out and about in the neighborhoods I serve, meeting small business owners, and helping to build strong, vibrant communities. When I recommend a local restaurant, coffee shop, or Pilates studio, I do so with firsthand experience—I frequent these businesses and can share the real deal with my clients.
I pride myself not only on my business acumen but also on sharing insights about life in the neighborhoods I serve. I focus on aspects like parks, trails, healthy eating, fitness centers, and walkability, ensuring my clients have a holistic understanding of what it means to live in North Dallas. There’s so much to do and experience, and I want my clients to fully embrace the vibrant lifestyle that awaits them in their new community.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
One of the best ways I’ve grown my clientele is by building genuine relationships through networking and kindness. I try to meet new people every day, whether it’s at community events, school functions, or just out and about in the neighborhood.
Real estate has sharpened my skills in photography and videography, which I absolutely love. I often take videos at my sons’ basketball games, capturing those special moments. If I can do something nice for others—like recording and sharing videos of their kids playing—I’m more than happy to do it. I’ve found that it’s really the little things you might rarely think about that can make the biggest impact.
I also make it a point to express appreciation, whether it’s sending thank-you cards or supporting small businesses. These gestures help me build connections that often turn into friendships. Since a big part of my business comes from referrals, I really value nurturing relationships in all areas of my life. By spreading kindness and support, I create a network of loyal clients and friends who trust me with their real estate needs.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
You know, one of the most significant stories from my journey that really highlights my resilience is my experience as a thyroid cancer survivor. When I first got that diagnosis, it was such a scary time. I was filled with uncertainty, especially about my future and whether I would be able to have more children, which was something I really wanted.
During that time, I leaned heavily on my faith to get me through. I found solace in lots of prayer and spent time reading my Bible, which helped ground me. The encouragement from my friends and family was invaluable; they really rallied around me and provided the support I needed.
Now, I’m proud to say I’m a 20-year survivor! Not only did I overcome cancer, but I also had the incredible blessing of welcoming three amazing sons into my life, including my spirited twin boys, who were carried to term.
Looking back, that experience taught me so much. It showed me that resilience isn’t just about getting through tough times; it’s also about embracing the wonderful things that come afterward. My journey has shaped who I am today. I am stronger… Not only as a woman, but as a mom and in my work. It inspires me to help others find their strength when they face similar challenges and I’m grateful to be given the opportunity to do it.
