We were lucky to catch up with Courtney Collins recently and have shared our conversation below.
Courtney, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
The tag line came to me first. It was “Let me show you the ropes of Mahjong”. Then it just came to me from there! My next thought was a cowgirl riding her Chinese dragon (that is an integral part of Mahjong) and I thought it was such a fun Texas spin on the Chinese roots of Mahjong. After that, the name Mahjong Rodeo just fell into place!

Courtney, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi! I’m Courtney. I’m a Texas girl through and through. I’m a fairly recent transplant to The Woodlands having been here for only a few years. I’ve been looking for a way to really connect with my community.
One night I went to a Mahjong lesson with a couple of friends. I was immediately hooked. I acquired a few sets of mahjong tiles and accessories and thought this might be a good way to meet other like minded women in my community. So, I set out on social media trying to see who might be interested in learning and playing with me.
This quest to meet others and share my Mahjong addiction quickly grew into a legit side gig.
I’m a Certified Mahjong Instructor who teaches the game in The Woodlands and all surrounding areas. I love bringing people together, meeting so many new faces, and connecting with people over this gorgeous and timeless game.
I’ve been hosting Mahjong 101 classes for beginners at local boutiques, restaurants, and bars (whoever is willing to have me)! I also do a lot of private parties. If you have a group of people willing to learn or want to come solo we can find a spot for you!
When you book with me, I bring everything you need to learn and host your group. I bring the tables, chairs, and all the Mahjong essentials and accessories! Every player will leave my class with a good understanding of the game and how to read and understand the National Mah Jongg League playing card. Players also take home a How-To instruction guide, tile guide, and an alternative playing card.
Mahjong is sweeping the nation right now with all it’s might. People are drawn to the beauty of the mahjong tiles and mats. It’s the perfect way to connect with friends, old and new, while enjoying your favorite drinks and delights. It’s important to me to make sure that everyone feels welcome, included, and leaves the class with at least one new friend (me)!
You can find me on social media @mahjongrodeo or my website, mahjongrodeo.com.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
So I’m not a social media professional by any means. I feel challenged in that area, actually. But the community I have built there is 100% organic growth and I’m very proud of that. I like to make sure that if people are responding to my posts and stories that I’m engaging with them and making them feel like they are a part of Mahjong Rodeo!
I also think it’s so important to engage with other local businesses and brands that you love, and don’t let up on telling people how much you love them. Even when you think no one is listening, they are.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Definitely social media and collaboration with local businesses and brands! Having my own easily identifiable website and social media names have helped too (@mahjongrodeo & mahjongrodeo.com)
