Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Colorjoy. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Colorjoy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
One of our favorite memories from creating our debut album, Golden Age, came about from recording all of our friends singing on the song, “Drops of Honey.” We carved out an entire day devoted to capturing their vocals on multiple songs, but “Drops of Honey” stood out amongst the rest because it felt like we were all just singing along to our favorite song at the bar. Their vocals gave the bridge so much more energy and drove home its core message of friendship and youth. We were even able to incorporate one of the outtakes into the outro of the song where you can hear all of us laughing at ourselves and singing at the top of our lungs.

Colorjoy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
We’re Emily and Sam, aka Colorjoy, an alt-rock/pop band based in NYC. After almost a decade of playing together, we decided it was time to create a space for the two of us to write and perform, focusing completely on the passion and joy making music together makes us feel. Colorjoy represents who we are as a duo – always changing but consistently coming back to what keeps us grounded. Our debut album, Golden Age (released May 2023), is a reflection of that idea. With tracks touching on various concepts – from the feeling of blind optimism to our reflections on introversion – we aim to explore different aspects of who we are, while always sticking to how we truly feel.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The driving factor for us has always been writing music that feels genuine and can provide something to listeners. Our current goal is to continue writing our second album. Golden Age was a great introduction to who we are and the music that we want to put out. After playing those songs live for so long, we’ve found that we want to develop our sound even further so it speaks to who we are now. In general, our priority is to just keep writing while we have so much to say.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part about Colorjoy is being able to go out and give our music to people live. Playing shows has always been what we look forward to most and we feel that we’re at a place now where every show is a celebration of who we are and the friendships that we’ve been able to make through the band. The best part of every show we play is the fulfilling feeling of performing our music with our amazing musicians and friends.
