We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Codi Heiler & Kimberly Pepera a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Codi Heiler &, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
We’d say that starting our own business and still working our full time jobs is a huge risk for our business. We both love home decor and we love helping others find timeless pieces for their own homes. The problem is we are 90% e-commerce. So a lot of focus needs to be on gaining the attention via social media which is a TON of work. This work takes time away from our families and obviously makes a full day of non stop working since we have our full time jobs. Both of us work in the financial industry which are very time consuming jobs. Codi is a GO GETTER and loves to dry out floral which has been a huge hit for us at the town Markets and we have even started venturing out and working on dry florals for weddings. We’d say the reward has been finding our niche.
Codi Heiler &, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Growing up in Michigan with our families we have a huge appreciation for the changing seasons and beautiful views. Kim and I (Codi) met in 2013 with an instant connection to wine and home decor. Our husbands are identical twins so we started to spend time with each other weekly at our homes discussing what we wanted to change in the structure, add for the upcoming season, and new home stores we found. After a few years of growing to know each other, we talked about having our own home boutique business together one day. With it being a dream in the back of our heads for years, one day in 2021 at Kim’s house, we were having a glass of wine and decided it was time to put that dream into a reality. We started slow, creating an Instagram & a blog. COCO & KK LLC is our business to find home decor items at department stores and share them with our follower community to inspire them to create the cozy home they have always wanted! After a year of creating an engaged audience and beginning to see what it feels like to be a business owner, it was time to start the process of opening our very own home decor boutique; valley + primrose. The name stems from our birthday month floral. Kim, Lily of the Valley, and Codi being the primrose flower. We love bringing the Michigan nature inside our homes, and flowers are a big part of refreshing your home decor. They bring smiles to your face and in turn, make the giver feel a sense of love & coziness. This is what we want our home boutique to feel like. We want to inspire those who have been looking for it, bring beautiful dried floral into your home, and have timeless pieces that you can use year-round to blend with your seasonal decor.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
We think starting our page COCO & KK has really help with gaining a good group of home decor lovers like our selves and now we have a supportive friends that encourage us every day why we do what we do. They keep us going.!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
We both decided to get our name out there it’s best to start working hometown markets as much as possible. So we started signing up for markets and we loving every second.
