We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Clayton Davis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Clayton, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
When I first got to college, I did not have a major picked out and I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. For some reason anything in the arts did not seem viable to me. But as I kept having troubles, and knew I had to make a decision soon, it just made the most sense to become a creative. My parents helped me to get to that decision, and as I keep falling in love with art and its creation I am more and more thankful for the path I am going down.
Clayton, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a graphic designer, photographer, fine artist, and musician in the upstate NY area. I mainly focus on graphic design and everything else I do is on the side when ever I feel passion to create. I love the act of creating. There is no better feeling for me than when I am deep into a project and the ideas are flowing out, that is when I am the happiest. That is why I do so many different art forms, it allows so many possibilities for me to create something beautiful.
I started designing back in high school, just for fun and for random things. Then I went to collage and I decided on becoming a design major. Things started to click and I started to develop my very own style and technique. My designs are bold and playful and because of my multi-medium background I am able to create entirely unique designs that are visually striking and demand the viewers attention. That especially is what sets me apart from many other artists, is my ability to pull from multiple different skills that I had learned from many different mediums and because of that I can create something that some other designer wouldn’t think of.
I can make and have made a multitude of design work including: posters, banners, packaging, logos, merch, album covers and stickers. I love to create the best designs for the right occasions and whatever you hire me to do, I will put everything into making the best possible design.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My main goal in life is to just make beautiful art that can affect other people. Everybody in the world has the exact same emotions and feelings. Even though we are all different we all can relate to each other in one way. Through my art I want to unite people and create experiences and emotions that show the beauty of life and earth.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is when people have approached me and said how much my art has resonated with them, or how it affected them, or how they perceived it. As I was saying before, the point of art is to convey emotions, and when I pour my soul into something and all of that hard work helped someone or just made them feel that same emotion. That is when I know I have succeeded.
